Recently, due to work commitments, I’ve been frequently traveling between Barcelona and Zaragoza. After trying several different transportation methods, I’d like to share the pros and cons of each option. The two cities are approximately 300 kilometers apart, and there are quite a few choices available.
AVE High-Speed Train is the Fastest Option
From Barcelona Sants station to Zaragoza Delicias station, the AVE high-speed train takes only about 1 hour and 30 minutes. If you book in advance on the Renfe official website, ticket prices range between 20-60 euros, with earlier bookings offering better deals. I personally recommend booking at least two weeks in advance to secure Promo or Promo+ discount tickets. There are over a dozen trains daily during peak hours, making it very convenient.

Transportation Methods Comparison
Here’s a detailed comparison of the main transportation options:
| Transportation | Duration | Price Range | Advantages | Disadvantages |
| AVE High-Speed Train | 1.5 hours | 20-60€ | Fast and comfortable | Higher price |
| Regular Train | 3-4 hours | 15-30€ | Economical | Time-consuming |
| Long-Distance Bus | 3.5-4 hours | 10-25€ | Most affordable | Less comfortable |
| Self-Driving | 3 hours | 40€ fuel | Flexible schedule | Parking concerns |
Bus is a Good Choice for Budget Travelers
Both Alsa and FlixBus operate this route, with tickets typically ranging from 10-25 euros. Although it takes 3.5 to 4 hours, if you’re not in a hurry, it’s actually quite acceptable. Buses usually depart from Barcelona Nord station and arrive at Zaragoza bus station. I recommend bringing a neck pillow for a more comfortable journey.
Self-Driving Considerations
If you choose to drive from Barcelona to Zaragoza, you’ll mainly take the AP-2 highway. Although some suggest taking the free N-II national road, I tried it once and found the road conditions complex with many small towns to pass through, making it more tiring. Highway tolls are about 15 euros, plus fuel costs totaling around 40 euros. Parking in Zaragoza city center isn’t easy, so I recommend booking a parking spot online in advance or choosing a hotel with parking facilities.
My Personal Recommendations
If traveling from Zaragoza to Barcelona on a weekday, I’d choose the AVE around 7 AM - you can have breakfast on the train, handle emails, and arrive just in time to start the workday. For weekend leisure trips, the bus is perfectly adequate, and the money saved can be spent on good meals in Zaragoza. Self-driving is suitable when you want to explore nearby towns, for instance, you can detour to visit the Monasterio de Piedra monastery near Zaragoza - the scenery is truly spectacular, especially when experiencing Zaragoza versus Barcelona.
