I recently planned a trip from Madrid to Zaragoza and researched the distance and transport options between the two cities. Here’s what I found.
Basic Distance Information
The straight-line distance from Madrid to Zaragoza is approximately 275 kilometers, though the actual travel distance is longer. If you take the A-2 highway for Zaragoza Madrid transport, the actual journey covers about 314 kilometers, which is the most commonly used driving route from Zaragoza to Madrid. There’s also an alternative route via the N-II national road, similar in distance but with more complex road conditions.
Transport Options Comparison
I’ve compiled several main transport options for Madrid vs Zaragoza, so you can choose based on your needs:
| Transport | Duration | Price Range | Pros & Cons |
| AVE High-Speed Train | 1h 15min | €25-60 | Fastest and most comfortable |
| Regional Train | 3-4 hours | €15-30 | Budget-friendly |
| Long-Distance Bus | 3.5-4 hours | €10-20 | Cheapest option |
| Self-Drive | 3 hours | €40 fuel | Flexible schedule |

My Recommendation
If budget isn’t a major concern, I highly recommend taking the AVE high-speed train. While tickets are pricier, you’ll arrive in just over an hour, and the train is comfortable with WiFi available. Last time I traveled, I booked online in advance and got an early-bird ticket for around €30, which was excellent value.
If you choose to drive, note that the A-2 highway is a toll road costing approximately €10, plus fuel brings the total to around €50. The advantage is you can stop at Guadalajara or other small towns along the way, giving you more flexibility. However, parking in Madrid city center can be tricky, so factor that into your planning.
Long-distance buses are the cheapest option but sitting for over 3 hours can be tiring—suitable for budget-conscious travelers. Alsa operates frequent services, and you can book tickets on their website or app.
At 314 kilometers, the distance isn’t too far for a weekend round trip. Zaragoza’s Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar and Aljafería Palace are both worth visiting, so I recommend checking them out if you get the chance.
