After living in Zaragoza for nearly two years, friends often ask me about the cost of living here. Today I’m sharing my daily expenses to give you a reference point. Compared to Madrid and Barcelona, Zaragoza’s prices are definitely more affordable, though it depends on your spending habits.
Housing Costs
Rent is the biggest fixed expense. A studio apartment in the city center costs around 400-550 euros per month. If you choose a shared room near Delicias or Universidad, you can manage with 250-350 euros. I currently live on the edge of Casco Histórico in a one-bedroom apartment for 480 euros monthly, including property fees but utilities separate, adding roughly 60 euros more each month. I recommend newcomers prioritize areas near tramvía stations for much easier commuting.

Daily Food Expenses
For grocery shopping, I usually go to Mercadona or Carrefour, spending about 35-45 euros weekly. Here’s a price comparison of common items:
| Item | Mercadona | Carrefour | Alcampo |
| Milk 1L | 0.85€ | 0.79€ | 0.75€ |
| Eggs 12pcs | 2.10€ | 1.95€ | 1.89€ |
| Bread 500g | 1.20€ | 1.35€ | 1.15€ |
| Chicken breast 1kg | 6.50€ | 6.80€ | 5.99€ |
| Tomatoes 1kg | 1.80€ | 1.65€ | 1.55€ |
For dining out, a menú del día typically costs 10-15 euros, including starter, main course, dessert and drink. El Tubo area has many tapas bars where you can get a tapa with beer for 3-4 euros. Evening gatherings with friends average around 20 euros per person for a satisfying meal. Shopping for fresh ingredients at Central market on weekends offers better prices than supermarkets and higher quality in Zaragoza.
Transportation & Other Expenses
Public transport is convenient: single tickets cost 1.35 euros, monthly passes are 43 euros for unlimited bus and tram rides. I mainly walk and use Bizi bike-sharing, with an annual card costing just 36.50 euros and the first 30 minutes free—perfect for getting around the old town. Occasional taxis within the city center cost 7-12 euros for short trips.
Other miscellaneous expenses: my Yoigo phone plan is 15 euros monthly with 20GB data; gym membership 30 euros/month; haircuts range from 10-15 euros for men, 25-40 euros for women. Overall, 1000 euros per month excluding rent, you can live quite comfortably on 600-800 euros monthly. Of course, this reflects my personal spending habits—if you enjoy frequent outings or shopping, budget accordingly higher.
Zaragoza’s overall cost of living ranks as moderate-to-low in Spain, yet quality of life remains high. The city is perfectly sized with everything you need and a relaxed pace.
