Zaragoza Expo Plaza: A Modern Landmark at the Gateway of Aragon
Last weekend, I made a special trip to Zaragoza’s Expo Plaza, and the place exceeded my expectations by far. After the 2008 World Expo ended, this area didn’t become an abandoned exhibition site like in many cities, but instead truly integrated into local daily life. The plaza covers a considerable area with a very open design, particularly suitable for weekend family strolls. It takes about 20 minutes by bus from the city center, making it reasonably accessible.

The most striking feature of the plaza is the iconic Torre del Agua water tower building, now converted into a water resources museum. If you’re planning to visit the Zaragoza Expo pavilions, I recommend setting aside at least half a day. The plaza itself is perfect for photography and leisurely walks, while the nearby Puerto Venecia shopping center is one of Spain’s largest open-air shopping centers, requiring at least 2-3 hours to explore. Parking is abundant, so driving is completely hassle-free. In summer, remember to bring sun protection as there aren’t many shaded areas.
A Local Perspective
Talking with several Zaragoza locals, they generally consider the Expo Plaza one of the city’s most successful urban renewal projects in recent years. This area was basically an industrial zone before, but now it’s completely transformed. On weekends, you often see many families hosting birthday parties or small gatherings here, creating a wonderful atmosphere.
Overall, Zaragoza Expo Plaza is not just a tourist attraction, but a vibrant urban living space. If you’re traveling in the Aragon region or living in Zaragoza, this Zaragoza Expo site is definitely worth a special visit.
