Visitor Guide to the Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar in Zaragoza and Experience Sharing
Last month I visited Zaragoza and made sure to set aside time to see the famous Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar. This church is truly breathtaking, and I’d like to share my experience along with some useful information.
Basic Information and Opening Hours
The Basilica is located on the banks of the Ebro River and is one of Zaragoza’s most iconic buildings. The church is free and open to the public, but if you want to climb the tower or visit the museum, you’ll need to purchase separate tickets. I recommend going in the morning when it’s less crowded and better for photos.
| Item | Time/Price |
| Church Opening Hours | 6:45-20:30 |
| Tower Access Hours | 10:00-14:00, 16:00-18:00 |
| Tower Admission | Adults €3 |
| Museum Admission | Adults €2 |

Architectural Features Worth Seeing
The interior decoration is exquisite, especially the ceiling frescoes by masters including Goya. The Holy Chapel is the heart of the basilica, housing the statue of the Virgin Mary where many believers queue to kiss the sacred pillar. Even if you’re not religious, you can feel the solemn atmosphere.
The church features 11 domes and 4 tall towers, creating a spectacular exterior view. I highly recommend climbing one of the towers—although there are quite a few steps, the panoramic views of the Ebro River and Zaragoza’s old town from above are absolutely worth it. On clear days, the visibility is exceptional.
Visiting Tips and Important Notes
Proper attire is required to enter the church—avoid overly casual clothing like shorts and tank tops. Photography is allowed inside, but please turn off your flash and maintain silence. If you arrive during mass, it’s best to observe quietly from the perimeter without disturbing worshippers.
Nearby attractions include the Aljafería Palace, making it easy to plan a full day’s itinerary. The plaza in front of the Basilica often features street performers, creating a wonderful atmosphere. There are plenty of restaurants nearby where you can try local tapas after your visit.
The Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar is a must-see destination in Zaragoza. Whether you’re interested in architecture, art, or religious culture, you’ll find it rewarding. I hope this information helps those planning to visit.
