Last week I traveled from Zaragoza to Valencia and compiled my experience with different transportation methods for those who need it. This route is quite popular since the distance between the two cities isn’t too far—about 250 kilometers—with several travel options available.
Train Travel
Taking Renfe’s AVE high-speed train is the most time-efficient option, departing from Zaragoza-Delicias station to Valencia-Joaquín Sorolla station, with direct journey time of approximately 1 hour 25 minutes. Ticket prices fluctuate considerably; booking in advance can get you Promo tickets around 20 euros, while last-minute purchases for Zaragoza Valencia travel may cost over 50 euros. I booked mine two weeks ahead on the Renfe website for this Zaragoza Valencia derby trip, spending 42 euros round-trip, which was reasonable. The high-speed train’s advantages include punctuality, comfortable seating, and onboard WiFi—perfect for those in a hurry or seeking comfort.

Long-Distance Bus
If you’re on a tight budget for Zaragoza to Valencia moving, ALSA buses are a good alternative. The journey from Zaragoza bus station to Valencia takes about 3.5 to 4 hours, with tickets typically ranging from 15 to 25 euros. The downside is the longer travel time, and you might encounter traffic during holidays or weekend peak hours. However, the seating space is decent, with rest stops at service areas where you can use restrooms or grab snacks. Ideal for backpackers with flexible schedules looking to save money.
Driving Experience
Driving via the A-23 and A-7 highways takes approximately 3 hours, depending on traffic and driving speed. Tolls cost around 15 euros one way, and fuel expenses run about 30 euros at current prices. The advantage of driving is schedule flexibility and the option to stop at Teruel or other small towns along the way, with scenic views throughout. The only hassle is expensive parking in Valencia city center, so I recommend researching hotel or public parking locations in advance.
| Transportation | Duration | Price Range | Suitable For |
| AVE High-Speed Train | 1.5 hours | 20-60 euros | Business or leisure travelers in a hurry |
| ALSA Bus | 3.5-4 hours | 15-25 euros | Budget-conscious backpackers |
| Driving | 3 hours | 45 euros | Families or small groups preferring flexibility |
Personal Recommendations
For weekend getaways, I strongly recommend taking the train—it saves time and effort. If traveling with a group of friends, renting a car and splitting costs is actually quite economical, plus you can explore surrounding areas. Buses work well for solo travelers who aren’t pressed for time. Also, regardless of your chosen method, try to avoid Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings during peak hours—otherwise train tickets are expensive, buses are crowded, and highways are congested.
Valencia is definitely worth visiting—the paella, City of Arts and Sciences, and old town are all amazing. Feel free to leave comments with any questions!
