Zaragoza to Gran Canaria Travel Guide
I recently returned from Gran Canaria and want to share my travel experience departing from Zaragoza. As a resident of the Aragon region, vacationing in the Canary Islands has always been on my bucket list. This trip finally happened, and the entire journey went very smoothly. I hope my experience can help those planning to visit.
Flight and Transportation Options
Departing from Zaragoza Airport, there are currently no direct flights to Gran Canaria, so you’ll typically need to connect through Madrid or Barcelona. I chose a flight connecting through Madrid, with a total flight time of approximately 5 hours. I recommend booking tickets 2-3 months in advance for better prices. Round-trip tickets during off-season cost around 150-200 euros, which may double during peak season. After arriving at Gran Canaria Airport, you can choose to rent a car or take a bus to various towns. I personally recommend renting a car, as public transportation on the island is not very convenient.

Accommodation and Budget Planning
Gran Canaria offers diverse accommodation options, from budget hostels to luxury resorts. I stayed in the Maspalomas area for 5 nights at an apartment-style hotel with a pool, costing about 70 euros per night. If you want to compare Zaragoza and Gran Canaria on a budget, consider guesthouses in Las Palmas city center for more affordable prices. Below is a comparison of accommodation prices across different areas:
| Area | Accommodation Type | Average Price/Night | Features |
| Maspalomas | Resort Hotel | 80-150 euros | Near dunes and beaches |
| Las Palmas | City Guesthouse | 40-70 euros | Convenient transport, abundant dining |
| Puerto de Mogán | Sea View Apartment | 90-180 euros | Beautiful scenery, ideal for vacation |
| Telde | Budget Hostel | 30-50 euros | Affordable, near airport |
Must-Visit Attractions
Gran Canaria’s most famous attraction is undoubtedly the Maspalomas Dunes, where golden desert sands extend to the Atlantic Ocean with spectacular views. I originally thought it was just an ordinary beach, but it completely exceeded expectations. I also recommend Roque Nublo mountain for panoramic views of the entire island. If you enjoy hiking, visit Barranco de Guayadeque ravine, where the natural landscapes are unforgettable. The Vegueta district in Las Palmas old town is also worth exploring, with many traditional buildings and local restaurants.
Cuisine and Dining Experience
Canary Islands cuisine blends Spanish mainland and African flavors, and you must try the local specialty of wrinkled potatoes with mojo sauce, plus fresh seafood. I had a meal at a seafood restaurant in Puerto de Mogán that cost about 50 euros for two people with generous portions. Local wines are also excellent and cheaper than on the mainland. Supermarkets sell various tropical fruits, with especially fresh mangoes and papayas.
Practical Travel Tips
Finally, here are some practical suggestions: Gran Canaria has warm weather year-round, but temperature differences between morning and evening are significant, so bring a light jacket. Sunscreen is essential as UV rays are strong. If planning to visit the dunes or beaches, bring plenty of drinking water. When renting a car, consider purchasing full insurance as the island has many mountain roads. Additionally, locals generally don’t speak much English, so knowing some basic Spanish will be very helpful. Overall, traveling from Zaragoza to Gran Canaria is well worth it and provides an unforgettable island vacation experience.
