Hey everyone! I’m new to the forum and have seen many prospective students asking about the cost of attending university in Spain. As someone who’s been through it, I’ve put together a detailed list of costs and methods for studying at a Spanish university to help you with your budget. The spending here can vary widely depending on your lifestyle, but it’s always wise to understand the potential university immigration costs in Spain beforehand!
Tuition Fees
First, let’s tackle the biggest expense everyone worries about: tuition fees. Spanish universities are divided into public and private, and their prices are worlds apart.
Public Universities
Public university tuition is calculated per credit. A bachelor’s degree typically requires 60 credits per year. The cost per credit varies by field of study and autonomous community, generally ranging from €15 to €50. Therefore, the annual tuition for a bachelor’s degree is around €1,000 - €3,500. For a master’s degree, the per-credit fee is higher, so the total costs of postgraduate studies in Spain could be between €2,000 and €5,000. Quick tip: Tuition fees are relatively cheaper in the Andalusia region, while Madrid and Catalonia tend to be more expensive.
Private Universities
Private universities set their own prices, which are much higher. Tuition fees generally start from €6,000/year. For popular private institutions like business or design schools, it’s common to spend €15,000 or even €20,000 a year. Of course, the teaching resources and facilities are often better, so it’s a matter of personal choice.
Cost of Living
Besides tuition, living expenses are the other major outlay. I mainly live in Madrid, so I’ll use a major city as an example to give you a rough monthly budget. Costs in smaller cities will be significantly lower!

The table below will give you a clearer idea:
| Item | Approximate Monthly Cost |
| Rent | €350 - €550 |
| Food | €200 - €300 |
| Transportation | €20 |
| Utilities & Entertainment | €100 - €150 |
| Total | €670 - €1,020 |
Rent is definitely the biggest part of your living expenses. Sharing a room in the city center of Madrid or Barcelona will easily cost you €400 or more. The best way to save money is to eat out every day cook your own meals and live a bit further from the center in an area with good transport links.
If you’re studying at a public university, considering both tuition and living costs, an annual budget of €10,000 to €15,000 is a reasonable and comfortable range. Compared to countries like the UK or the US, studying in Spain offers excellent value for money.
