Hey everyone! Lately, I’ve seen a lot of new students on the forums asking when exactly universities in Spain start, and it seems everyone is both excited and a little anxious. As someone who’s been through it, I totally get that feeling. So today, I’m taking some time to put together a guide on Spanish university start dates and some important things to note, hoping it will help those of you about to land in Spain!
First things first: there’s no single, nationwide start date in Spain! The specific date can vary by autonomous community, university, and even campus. But generally, for most public universities, the official start of classes for undergraduate and official master’s programs is sometime between mid-September and early October. Don’t just assume that classes will start on September 1st!

Important Dates Before the Semester Begins
Before classes officially begin, there are a few very important steps you need to pay close attention to. The most crucial one is the Matrícula, which is what we call ‘enrollment’ or ‘course registration.’ This process, related to the overall Spanish university start dates, is usually completed online through the university’s official website between July and September. Please, and I can’t stress this enough, keep a close eye on your university emails and official announcements. You absolutely do not want to miss your registration window—which is also relevant to the timeline for Spanish university graduation dates—as the consequences can be serious! Additionally, many universities hold a welcome week (or ‘freshers’ week’) about a week before classes start. I highly recommend you attend. It’s a fantastic opportunity to get familiar with the campus, meet new people, and learn about the university’s services. Don’t be like me and foolishly wait until the end of September to arrive, only to miss out on many fun activities and crucial Spanish university admission dates.
Sample Academic Calendars
To give you a clearer idea, I’ve compiled the approximate first-semester schedules for the 2024-2025 academic year at a few major universities. Please note that this is just for reference; you should always consult the official ‘Calendario Académico’ from your specific university and department for the definitive dates
!
| University Name | Approx. First Semester Start Date | Approx. First Semester End Date |
| Complutense University of Madrid | September 9 | December 20 |
| University of Barcelona | September 12 | December 22 |
| Autonomous University of Madrid | Early September | Late December |
| University of Valencia | September 9 | January 17 |
An academic year in Spain is divided into two semesters. The first semester typically runs from September to the end of December, followed by an exam period in January. The second semester starts in late January or early February and ends in late May, followed by an exam period in June. There are long breaks in between, such as Christmas and Holy Week (Easter)
, which are great times to travel!
My final piece of advice for new students is: book your flights as early as you can, but make sure to leave plenty of time to handle all the necessary paperwork upon arrival. It’s best to arrive in Spain one to two weeks before your classes start. Finally, I wish you all a smooth and successful start to your new student life in Spain!
