72nd San Sebastián Film Festival Concludes with Golden Shell for Spanish Director Albert Serra

The 72nd San Sebastián International Film Festival took place in Spain from September 20 to 28, 2024. The documentary ‘Tardes de soledad’ (Afternoons of Solitude), directed by Albert Serra, won the top honor, the Golden Shell (Concha de Oro). It was the only documentary in the festival’s official competition and focuses on the contemporary world of bullfighting.

Top Prize Awarded to a Documentary

Officially, the Golden Shell was awarded to ‘Tardes de soledad’ by Albert Serra. This co-production between Spain, France, and Portugal marks the first time director Serra has won the festival’s top prize. The jury praised the film for its unique perspective on the daily life of bullfighter Andrés Roca Rey, its strong visual impact, and its documentary value. It is the first non-fiction film to win the Golden Shell since 2011 and marks the second consecutive year a Spanish film has won the award.

Other Major Awards Announced

Best Director Award Shared by Two Filmmakers

Beyond the Golden Shell, the Silver Shell (Concha de Plata) for Best Director was shared by Laura Carreira for ‘On Falling’ and Pedro Martín-Calero for ‘El llanto’. Both are emerging or young directors, reflecting the festival’s focus on new creative talent.

Acting Awards Honor Spanish and French Talent

The Silver Shell for Best Leading Performance was awarded to Patricia López Arnaiz for her role in ‘Los destellos,’ directed by Pilar Palomero. The Silver Shell for Best Supporting Performance went to Pierre Lottin for his work in ‘Quand vient l’automne’ (When Autumn Comes).

Special Prize and International Presence

The Special Jury Prize was awarded to the ensemble cast of ‘The Last Showgirl,’ directed by Gia Coppola. This American production added to the festival’s international flavor. Additionally, various events were held during the festival, attracting international filmmakers and audiences.

This edition of the festival presented numerous official awards, highlighting works from young Spanish and European filmmakers. Albert Serra’s win further confirms the active presence of Spanish cinema on the international stage. The awards ceremony was held on September 28, marking the successful conclusion of the 72nd San Sebastián Film Festival.
