History Repeats Itself: The Shadow of 2024’s “Worm Meal” Crisis Returns

This is not the first time a school cafeteria in the Basque region has faced such an issue. Back in 2024, the area experienced a similar “worm meal” crisis when insect larvae were found in lunches at several public schools. At that time, the Basque Government terminated its contract with the catering company, Serunion, over the incident. Facua Euskadi points out that this recurrence exposes systemic regulatory failures, and that government departments must learn from past mistakes to prevent them from happening again.

Regulatory Responsibility and Legal Basis

According to a 2024 decree from the Basque Autonomous Community’s Department of Education, which regulates cafeterias in public non-university schools, the Department has a legal obligation to fully oversee the administrative and economic operations of these facilities. Facua Euskadi argues that the occurrence of this worm incident directly indicates that the current regulatory mechanism has significant loopholes in its implementation. The organization urges the government to strictly fulfill its supervisory duties and launch a thorough investigation to determine whether the problem lies within the food supply chain or in the subsequent processing and storage of the food.

Organization’s Appeal: Safeguarding Minors’ Dining Safety

In its letter, Facua Euskadi formally demands that the Basque Government’s Department of Education take all necessary measures to ensure such sanitary incidents do not happen again in Basauri or any other educational center in the Basque Autonomous Community. The organization emphasizes that, according to the relevant laws in the Basque Statute of Consumers and Users, public authorities have a duty to prioritize the protection of consumer rights, paying special attention to the safety and suitability of goods and services provided to minors. Facua Euskadi stated it will continue to follow the case until the violations are properly penalized, fighting for a hygienic and safe dining environment for children in schools.
