It’s that time of year again—the peak season for visas, apartment hunting, and booking flights! Lately, many new students on the forums have been asking when universities in Spain actually start, and it seems there’s a bit of anxiety in the air. As someone who’s been through it, I’ve put together a summary of the 2024-2025 academic start dates for major Spanish universities to help all you newcomers plan your journey smoothly!
First things first, let’s be clear: Spain doesn’t have a single, nationwide start date. The exact timing varies by autonomous community, university, and even by faculty. However, in general, the start of the academic year for both bachelor’s and official master’s degrees is concentrated in September. Officially, the academic year might begin on September 1st or October 1st, but classes usually start a little later, typically between the second and third week of September.

Overview of Start Dates by Region and Major Universities
Here’s a look at the situation in a few major student cities to give you a general idea of the Spanish university schedule. But remember, the most accurate information will always be in the official email from your university and the academic calendar published on their website
! Don’t get it wrong!
Community of Madrid
Universities in the Madrid region typically start earlier. For example, at institutions like the Complutense University of Madrid, the Autonomous University of Madrid, and Carlos III University, most undergraduate and master’s courses will officially begin in the second week of September.
Catalonia
The start dates for the University of Barcelona, the Autonomous University of Barcelona, and Pompeu Fabra University are also generally in early to mid-September. For instance, many programs at the UB (University of Barcelona)
are scheduled to start around September 12th. However, some faculties may have welcome weeks or registration periods that start even earlier.
To make it clearer, I’ve created a simple table. But remember, this is just a general timeframe, not the final date!
| University | Estimated Start Week for 2024-2025 | Notes |
| Complutense University of Madrid | September 9th to September 16th | Varies by faculty and program, be sure to check your email |
| University of Barcelona | Around September 12th | Final date depends on the faculty’s official announcement |
| University of Granada | Mid-September | Southern regions often start slightly later, keep an eye on the official website |
| University of Valencia | September 9th to September 13th | The official academic calendar is usually finalized by the end of July |
| University of Seville | Around September 16th | Again, it’s recommended to check the website and email notifications |
One last piece of advice: after you receive your acceptance letter, be proactive and go to your university’s official website. Look for a document called “Calendario Académico” or “Calendario Lectivo”—that’s your bible. It will detail the entire Spanish university holiday schedule, including start dates, exam weeks, Christmas, Holy Week (Semana Santa), and summer holidays. Wishing you all a smooth start to your wonderful study abroad journey in Spain!
