Recently, several friends have asked me about choosing a university for communication studies in Spain and how they rank. Coincidentally, the 2024 QS World University Rankings by Subject were just released. I’ve taken some time to look into the ‘Communication & Media Studies’ category, and today I’m sharing my findings on how Spanish universities performed. I hope this can be a helpful reference for prospective students.
Overall, Spain’s strength in communication education is quite impressive! This year, 253 universities worldwide made it onto this list, with Spain accounting for 14 of them—a respectable number among European countries. While none broke into the global top 20, several universities have earned global recognition for their quality and reputation, firmly securing their places within the Top 100.

Top Tiers of Spanish Communication Universities
When it comes to specific schools, three universities stand out as the undisputed ‘Big Three’ in Spanish communication studies, consistently dominating the rankings and holding unshakable positions.
- Complutense University of Madrid (UCM): Global Ranking 51-100. As the cradle of Spanish journalism, UCM’s Faculty of Information Sciences has a long and rich history. If you’re interested in disciplines like traditional journalism or public relations, UCM is undoubtedly the top choice. Being in Madrid, the capital offers unparalleled media resources and internship opportunities for students in communication programs at Spanish universities.
- Pompeu Fabra University (UPF): Global Ranking 51-100. Although UPF is a relatively young university, its academic standards are exceptionally high, particularly in the fields of audiovisual communication and advertising. The university has a more international and research-oriented focus and is located in Barcelona, a city with a vibrant artistic and creative atmosphere.
- University of Navarra (UNAV): Global Ranking 51-100. This is a top-tier private university known for its elite education and powerful alumni network. Its Faculty of Communication boasts first-class facilities and abundant practical opportunities, with many graduates going on to work for leading media organizations in Spain and around the world.
Other Excellent Institutions
Beyond the top three, several other universities also perform remarkably well, landing in the global Top 200 and offering great value. When considering communication programs at Spanish universities, these are worth a look. I’ve compiled a simple table for easy reference:
| University Name | 2024 QS Global Ranking | City |
| Autonomous University of Barcelona | 101-150 | Barcelona |
| Charles III University of Madrid | 151-200 | Madrid |
| Ramon Llull University | 151-200 | Barcelona |
| University of Barcelona | 201-250 | Barcelona |
Rankings aren’t the only factor
! Choosing a university requires considering many aspects, such as your personal interests, choice of city, whether to attend a public or private institution, and if the curriculum aligns with your career goals. The best approach is to visit each university’s official website and carefully review the course syllabi—that’s what truly matters.
So, what do you prioritize when choosing a university? Is it the overall ranking, the subject-specific ranking, the location, or internship opportunities? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below. We also welcome current students or alumni from these universities to share their experiences and offer valuable advice to prospective students!
