I’ve been living in Spain for a few years now, always renting. With rents soaring recently, my family and I decided it’s time to consider buying our own little place. The first step, naturally, was to download all the property-hunting apps to get a good feel for the market. I’m sure many of you are in the same boat, so today I’m sharing my experience with these apps, hoping it can help.

My Experience with Major Property-Hunting Apps
Idealista
This is arguably the ‘absolute king’ of the Spanish real estate world. Whether you’re renting or buying, it has the largest volume of listings. Practically every real estate agency in Spain lists their properties here. Its map search feature is excellent; you can draw a circle around your desired area to filter listings, which is very intuitive. However, because there are so many listings, I feel the prices are a bit firmer, and the room for negotiation might not be as great for resale properties in Spain. Also, in my personal opinion, the photos on the site tend to be highly ‘enhanced,’ so it’s best to be mentally prepared when you view the property in person.
Fotocasa
Fotocasa is Idealista’s main competitor. Its interface is clean and the user experience is quite good. While the total number of listings might not match Idealista’s, it has one key advantage: you can sometimes find exclusive listings from private owners or smaller agencies. This makes it an excellent complementary tool to Idealista. I usually set the same search filters on both apps and check them daily for any new surprises. Sometimes, the same property is listed at different prices on the two platforms, so it never hurts to check both.
Other Platforms & Summary
Besides these two giants, there are some regional or more niche platforms. For example, in the Catalonia region, Habitaclia is very popular with a high concentration of local listings. Another nationwide platform is Pisos.com, which can be a good alternative. To make the comparison clearer, I’ve created a simple table:
| Features | Idealista | Fotocasa |
| Number of Listings | Very High | High |
| Map Feature | 👍 | 👌 |
| Exclusive Listings | Fewer | Occasional Surprises |
| User Interface | Comprehensive | Clean and simple |
| Main Users | Agencies | Agencies & some private owners |
My strategy is to primarily use Idealista to determine the general area and price range, while setting up alerts on Fotocasa to avoid missing any opportunities. Buying a home is a major decision, and spending extra time on research beforehand is always a good idea.
