Shortly after arriving in Madrid, I was looking for a reliable and affordable place to learn Spanish systematically. Private language schools are quite expensive, and after asking around, many friends recommended the public Official School of Languages (Escuela Oficial de Idiomas, or EOI). I’ve researched the application process and I’m sharing a summary here to help others with the same goal.
The EOI is an official language teaching institution established by the Spanish Ministry of Education, with branches in major cities across Spain. Its biggest advantage is that it’s incredibly cheap! The fee for an entire academic year is only around two to three hundred euros, which is a real bargain compared to private schools that can charge thousands. Moreover, the certificates issued upon completion are recognized throughout Spain and even the entire EU. They are highly valuable and provide a great foundation for anyone planning to take the DELE exam or find a job locally.
A Brief Overview of the EOI Application Process
Applying to the EOI usually requires a bit of patience and luck. The process isn’t overly complicated, but it does unfold over a long period.
1. Keep an Eye on the Official Website
Each year, usually in late spring or early summer, the EOI in the Community of Madrid opens its pre-registration for the next academic year. You’ll need to fill out an application on the official education website for the Community of Madrid, where you can select your preferred schools and language levels. This step is just an expression of interest and doesn’t guarantee you a spot.
2. Take the Placement Test
If you are not starting from the A1 absolute beginner level, you will need to take a placement test to determine your actual proficiency. This test is usually held in June or September, and you register and pay for it online. After passing the test, you will be assigned to the appropriate level for the subsequent spot allocation.
3. The Lottery and Registration
This is the most crucial step. Since the number of applicants far exceeds the available spots, the school uses a public lottery system to determine the admission order. Once the lottery results are announced, the school will notify students in order to complete payment and registration at the school’s office within a specified time. If someone ahead of you gives up their spot, you might get a chance to fill it, so be sure to keep a close watch on your email and school announcements!
Regarding the fees and courses, which everyone is curious about, the EOI’s levels strictly follow the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), from A1 to C2. Tuition fees may vary slightly each year, but they always remain very affordable. Here is a reference table I’ve put together based on information from public schools in Madrid:
| Language Level | Course Format | Annual Tuition |
| A1 - A2 | Twice a week, 2 hours per class | Approx. €280 |
| B1 - B2.1 | Twice a week, 2 hours per class | Approx. €280 |
| B2.2 - C1 | Twice a week, 2 hours per class | Approx. €280 |
| C2 | Once a week, 3 hours per class | Approx. €190 |
That’s right, not per month, but for the entire academic year! Of course, there will be some additional costs for textbooks and materials upon registration each year, but overall, the value for money is unbeatable.

Finally, here are a few personal thoughts and suggestions. The teachers at EOI are very professional, but the teaching style leans towards a more traditional, academic approach. The class pace is quite structured, and it might not be as interactive as a small private class. Also, because the fees are so low, there are a lot of applicants, especially for popular schools in downtown Madrid. Getting a spot for popular languages and levels often comes down to the lottery, so there’s a significant element of luck involved. Therefore, I suggest you apply to several different EOIs, including those in the suburbs, to increase your chances of success. Regardless, for those who plan to live and work in Spain long-term and are on a budget, the EOI is an excellent choice for improving your language skills and integrating into the local culture. I hope everyone successfully gets into their desired school!
