Honestly, having a private garden is an amazing feeling! Especially in spring and summer, surrounded by greenery and flowers, having friends over for a barbecue on weekends while the kids and pets play on the lawn—it’s a kind of happiness you just don’t get in an apartment. But then there are things like garden pavers! Behind all the beauty is a lot of sweat. Weeding, watering, pruning branches, pest control… the list goes on. If you’re not a gardening expert like me, it can quickly turn from a joy into a chore. At first, I tried to handle it all myself, and I nearly ruined the garden.

In the end, I wisely hired a professional jardinero (gardener). Here’s a rough cost estimate for everyone, though of course, it varies greatly depending on the region and garden size. For example, it will definitely be more expensive in places like Marbella or Ibiza.

So, when dreaming of your own Andalusian patio, if you’re looking at villas with gardens, there are a few key points to consider: First, check for an automatic irrigation system—it’s a lifesaver! Second, look at the garden’s orientation. South-facing gardens get the most sun, but they’re also the hottest in summer, so you’ll need drought-resistant plants. Third, find out what plants the previous owner grew. Some plants typical of Spanish gardens can be particularly difficult to maintain. Choosing a low-maintenance garden is much more practical than one that looks gorgeous but requires a huge time investment.
Although maintaining a garden requires time and money, the quality of life it provides is priceless. Watching the sunset from your own yard with a drink in hand—that feeling of relaxation and contentment is surely why we chose Spain.
