I recently bought a chalet on the outskirts of Madrid, and honestly, just choosing a yard gate has been a real headache. My neighbors’ gates are all so different—some have vintage wrought iron gates, while others have sleek, modern aluminum ones. It feels like this ‘curb appeal’ project is a big deal, as it sets the first impression for the entire house.
How to Choose a Yard Gate Material?
I took a trip to Leroy Merlin and also chatted with some local craftsmen. It seems the main materials come down to a few options. I’ve put together a simple list of their pros and cons for your reference:
| Material | Pros | Cons |
| Wrought Iron | Beautiful vintage look, very sturdy | Heavy, requires regular painting to prevent rust |
| Aluminum | Lightweight, virtually maintenance-free, modern styles | Lacks the premium feel of iron, slightly higher price |
| Wood | Natural and beautiful, offers good privacy | Needs regular maintenance for moisture and pest control |
Style and Privacy Considerations
Besides the material, style is also crucial, impacting not just the look but also the Spanish villa prices. In the southern region of Andalusia, you’ll see many charming combinations of white walls with dark wood or iron gates. Here in Madrid, modern, flat-panel aluminum gates are becoming more popular for their clean look. Privacy is another key factor. Many people now opt for fully enclosed or semi-open designs, moving away from the traditional open-slat gates where you could see everything in the yard at a glance. Nowadays, people prefer to have their own private space.

These days, most gates are fitted with a motor. Being able to open it with a remote is a lifesaver on rainy days! In terms of price, the range is wide. A basic manual aluminum gate might cost around a thousand euros as part of a renovating a Spanish chalet project. However, if you’re looking at custom vintage wrought iron electric gates for your Spanish chalet with a yard, the sky’s the limit—three to four thousand euros or even more is normal. It’s truly un mundo (a whole world) out there.
We’re still deciding but are leaning towards a more modern aluminum gate, mainly for the convenience and because we’re too lazy for maintenance. What kind of yard gates do you all have? Any recommendations for good brands or craftsmen? Feel free to share and discuss!
