I just moved into a new Chalet, and while everything is great, the entrance door feels a bit old. The lock cylinder doesn’t look very sturdy either, which makes me feel uneasy. I’ve been researching new doors lately and discovered there’s quite a variety for villas here in Spain. I wanted to start a thread to chat about it and organize my own thoughts.
A Clash of Traditional and Modern
I feel like front doors for Spanish villas fall into two main categories. One is the traditional, rustic style, which is very common in some pueblos or older urbanizaciones. These doors are usually solid wood, often with decorative ironwork or studs, giving them a charming Andalusian courtyard vibe. The other category is the modern, minimalist style, with clean lines and colors like grey, white, or black. There’s a wider range of materials here, such as aluminum, PVC, and the now very popular armored doors.

The Dilemma of Choosing a Material
Choosing the right material is a real headache. I personally love the solid, warm texture of wooden doors; they seem to pair perfectly with the flowers and plants in the yard. But the downsides of wood are also obvious: they require regular maintenance, like painting or oiling, to prevent cracking and warping from sun and rain exposure. A neighbor told me that if I go with wood, it’s best to choose a hardwood like Iroko or Oak (Roble) for better durability. Modern materials are much more low-maintenance, especially armored doors, which feel like they max out the security level. They have a steel structure inside, offering superb anti-theft performance, and require almost no upkeep. The downside… well, they’re a bit pricey, and the style options aren’t as diverse as the many Spanish entrance doors available in wood, sometimes looking a bit ‘cold’.
Pros and Cons of Different Materials
I’ve put together a simple table to make it clearer:
| Material | Pros | Cons |
| Solid Wood | Great texture, versatile styles, natural beauty | Requires regular maintenance, susceptible to weather, pricey |
| Aluminum | Durable, low maintenance, modern look | Weaker insulation and soundproofing, scratches easily |
| PVC | Affordable, good insulation and soundproofing, no maintenance | Can look cheap, may discolor with long-term sun exposure |
| Armored Door | Extremely high security, very sturdy and durable | Expensive, heavy, limited style options |
Besides the door itself, the locks are also super important! Many new doors now come with anti-drill, anti-pry multi-point locking systems, which are several levels more secure than old-fashioned locks. When you’re replacing your door, don’t forget to ask about the lock’s security grade and brand. What kind of doors do you all have? Any good brands or installers to recommend? Thanks in advance, everyone!
