I just moved to Spain not long ago and have been house-hunting recently. I’ve found myself completely captivated by the Mediterranean-style villas here! Their exterior designs, in particular, are just so full of character. Every time I pass by those white or warm-yellow houses against the blue sky, it feels like life slows down. I wanted to start a thread to chat with everyone about this and gather some inspiration for my future home.

Signature Elements
When it comes to Spanish style, a few elements are absolutely key. First are the terracotta roof tiles on the roof—those semi-cylindrical tiles laid on low-pitched roofs create a wonderful, staggered effect with a strong play of light and shadow. Then there are the walls, many of which have a hand-plastered feel. The surface isn’t perfectly smooth but has a slightly coarse texture, which, when paired with rounded archways for doors and windows, is just so classic! Add some dark wooden shutters or wrought iron railings, and the details instantly come to life.
Materials and Colors
I’ve noticed that the materials and colors commonly used for villa exteriors in Spain are very thoughtfully chosen. Besides the terracotta tiles mentioned earlier, the walls are often made of Stucco. This material not only looks textured and authentic but is also well-suited for the local climate, a key factor for villa exteriors. In terms of color, apart from the classic pure white, there are many soft, earthy tones like beige, ochre, and pale pink. These colors, drawn from nature, are very pleasing to the eye and pair perfectly with the surrounding greenery and blue skies.
From my recent house viewings, I’ve summarized the characteristics of some different style elements and made a simple table to share with you all:
| Style Element | Description | Common Application |
| Terracotta Roof Tiles | S-shaped or semi-cylindrical clay tiles, warm colors | Roofing |
| Hand-Troweled Stucco Walls | Textured Stucco wall surface | Main building walls |
| Arched Doors and Windows | Rounded arch structures with soft lines | Porches, windows, entryways |
| Wrought Iron Details | Black forged iron with vintage designs | Balcony railings, window grilles, light fixtures |
Honestly, every time I see those beautifully designed courtyards with pots of geraniums by the door and bougainvillea climbing the walls, I can’t help but dream of living there myself. What are your thoughts on Spanish-style facades? Are there any particular details you love? If anyone has already renovated their own house, please share your experience!
