When I first arrived in Spain, navigating the healthcare system was a real headache. I had to sift through a thick medical directory with my insurance card just to find a doctor, then call to make a cita (appointment). Trying to understand the person on the other end, often with a strong local accent, was a major test of my Spanish skills! Fortunately, things are much easier now. Almost every insurance company has its own app, allowing you to manage everything on your phone, which is incredibly convenient. Today, I’m going to share my experiences with some of the main health insurance apps as a guide for newcomers.

A Comparison of Major Insurance App Features
For the most part, all insurance company apps are quite similar, offering the same core functions. These typically include online appointment booking, searching for medical centers and doctors, viewing lab results and medical records, online consultations, and managing your personal policy information. The main differences are in the UI design, smoothness of operation, and some unique features.
Sanitas
The Sanitas app is widely considered one of the best. The interface is clean and logically laid out. My favorite feature is the online consultation. For minor issues like a cold or a skin rash, you can have a quick video call with a doctor who can then issue an e-prescription. You just show the QR code on your phone at the pharmacy to get your medication, saving a trip to the clinic. Managing everything related to your Health Card, like booking and canceling appointments, is also very fast with almost no lag.
Adeslas
Adeslas also has a large user base, and its app is very comprehensive. However, I personally feel the interface design is a bit outdated, so you might need a moment to find the function buttons on your first use. Its main advantage is its extensive network of partner medical facilities. Using the app’s map view to find nearby doctors and clinics is especially convenient, and the location tracking is very accurate. Additionally, its health record management feature is well-designed, allowing you to log your own health data for your doctor’s reference. For those interested in the financial side of things, you can learn more about Spanish health insurance prices.
Below, I’ve put together a simple table comparing the core features of these apps for a clearer overview. For a deeper dive into how the system works, especially if you’re wondering if it’s free, check out this guide on Spanish health insurance.

When choosing an insurance plan, besides comparing prices and coverage, I highly recommend downloading and trying out their respective apps. After all, it’s the tool you’ll be interacting with most often. Which insurance provider are you with, and what’s your experience with their app? Feel free to share and discuss in the comments below!
