We’ve all likely seen our news feeds flooded with heartbreaking images from the recent earthquake in Turkey and Syria. It’s truly devastating. However, amidst the sorrow, there’s a story of hope and pride: the deployment of our very own Spanish START medical team.

The team’s response was incredibly swift. Shortly after the earthquake struck, they flew to Istanbul, Turkey, with a fully-equipped field hospital and then transferred to Iskenderun, one of the hardest-hit regions. This is no simple tent; it’s a true ‘mobile hospital’ with an operating room, pharmacy, laboratory, and even a maternity ward, providing victims with the comprehensive medical services that the [Spanish medical team] is known for. It was deeply moving to read reports of them working through the night in sub-zero temperatures to set up the hospital.
About the START Medical Team
For those who might not be familiar with the START medical team, here’s a quick overview. This unit is a specialized emergency response force under the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) and is certified by the World Health Organization as one of the world’s top-tier emergency medical teams. It includes not only professional doctors and nurses but also experts in logistics, water and sanitation, and communications, ensuring they can operate self-sufficiently for at least 15 days in any harsh environment.
Team Composition and Capabilities
The team brings together elite professionals from the public health systems of Spain’s various autonomous communities. For each mission, they can mobilize and reach any corner of the globe within 72 hours. The team deployed to Turkey consists of over 80 professionals. Their field hospital can treat around 200 patients daily and perform 7 to 10 major surgeries.
