Hello everyone, I recently sorted out my residency permit, and the next step is getting health insurance. I’ve seen a lot of discussions about this, but the information was quite scattered. I spent some time researching the main private health insurance companies in Spain, focusing on Adeslas, Asisa, and Sanitas. I’m sharing my findings here to hopefully help others facing the same dilemma.
At first, I was completely lost; they all seemed similar, with flashy advertisements. My approach was a bit old-school: I went through each of their official websites to check their plans and then emailed customer service with specific questions about things like waiting periods, dental coverage, and which hospitals and clinics near my home were covered by their Spanish health insurance. It was a tedious process, but it’s really important, as it concerns your health.

My Research Summary
After comparing them, I found that each company has its own focus; there’s no absolute ‘best’ one, it all depends on your personal needs. For example, if you’re looking for the largest network of hospitals and the most comprehensive coverage of specialities, Adeslas and Sanitas are usually the top choices. However, if you have a limited budget or specific needs, Asisa might offer better prices on certain plans. I’ve created a simple table here for a quick comparison, and I also found this post about healthcare jobs in Spain that might be interesting for some.
| Company | Pros | Cons | Best For |
| Adeslas | Widest network coverage, many partner hospitals | Coverage in some basic plans can be limited | Users wanting many healthcare options and with a flexible budget |
| Sanitas | Good customer service reputation, user-friendly plan design | Relatively higher prices, especially in Madrid and Barcelona | Users who prioritize service experience and digital access |
| Asisa | Good value for money, competitive pricing on specific plans | Network coverage in smaller cities may not be as good as the other two | Budget-conscious, healthy young people or students |
My Final Choice
After weighing everything, I ultimately chose Sanitas. The main reasons were their well-designed app, which makes booking appointments and checking results very convenient, and their customer service for Spanish health insurance was very responsive to emails, which made them feel more reliable. Although it’s a bit more expensive than Asisa, the convenience of having the general hospital closest to my home as one of their partners sealed the deal. Of course, this is just my personal choice, and I strongly recommend that you make your decision based on your own location, budget, and health needs.
One last piece of advice: before signing, make sure you carefully read the contract about the waiting periods (periodos de carencia) and co-payments (copagos)! Many cheaper plans have co-payments, meaning you have to pay an additional fee each time you see a doctor. If you choose such a plan just to save money upfront, it might not be cost-effective at all if you end up needing frequent medical care. I hope my sharing has been helpful, and I welcome anyone who has used these insurance companies to add their experiences and insights!
