Now that my current project is wrapping up, I’ve been thinking about a career change and exploring opportunities in the Spanish medical insurance sector. I spent some time researching a few of Spain’s major medical companies like Sanitas, Asisa, Adeslas, and DKV. I was surprised to find that the entry barriers are quite high. Today, I’ll share the recruitment requirements I’ve uncovered, as a heads-up for anyone else interested in this industry.

Language Skills: Spanish is a Must, English is a Plus
This is a fundamental hard requirement. Whether it’s for a receptionist, a customer service representative, a marketing specialist, or a claims analyst, fluent Spanish is mandatory. After all, the primary clients are locals, so communication barriers are a major issue. I saw several positions, such as International Client Specialist or roles involving cross-border healthcare cooperation, that explicitly require a C1 level of English as well. So, language proficiency is truly the first stepping stone; just being able to say “Hola, ¿qué tal?” is far from enough.
Education and Professional Background: Relevant Degrees are Key
Medical companies have a wide variety of roles, but they have high expectations for matching educational and professional backgrounds. The IT department hiring a programmer will require a degree in Computer Science or a related field. For marketing positions, a background in Business Administration (ADE), Marketing, or other business-related fields is a major advantage. For roles directly related to healthcare, such as medical advisors or health managers, a background in medicine, nursing, or pharmacy is almost essential. I’ve noticed that many companies specify “Formación Universitaria en…” (University Degree in…) in their job postings, effectively locking in the required major and making it difficult to apply from a different field.
Work Experience: “Plug-and-Play” is the Norm
Like many other industries, Spanish medical companies place a high value on relevant work experience. They seem to prefer hiring ‘plug-and-play’ employees who can contribute immediately, rather than investing a lot of time in training someone from scratch. I saw one job posting for a claims position that explicitly required “al menos 2 años de experiencia en un puesto similar en el sector asegurador” (at least 2 years of experience in a similar role in the insurance sector). For recent graduates or career changers, this might be the biggest hurdle. It may be necessary to start with entry-level positions or internships to build up experience. Here’s a summary I’ve compiled of common job types and their typical experience requirements, based on medical job openings in Spain, for your reference:
| Job Type | Typical Experience Requirement |
| Customer Service | 1-2 years of experience in the service industry |
| Marketing/Sales | 2+ years of experience in a relevant field, with a proven track record being a plus |
| Claims/Authorization | 2+ years of experience in insurance or healthcare administration |
| IT/Data Analysis | 3+ years of experience in relevant technologies |
To get into a medical company in Spain, there’s quite a bit of preparation involved. Besides the hard requirements of language, education, and experience, soft skills like teamwork, problem-solving abilities, and a passion for the healthcare industry, as well as knowledge of Spanish medical insurance, are also highly valued. My personal feeling is that while the barrier to entry is high, the industry is relatively stable with clear career progression paths.
