Having recently moved to Spain, beyond the sun, beaches, and food, I’ve also been paying close attention to the local industry and economy. I was recently chatting with a local and discovered that besides tourism, agriculture, and services, Spain is actually a hidden champion in some high-tech manufacturing sectors, especially in medical devices and precision machine tools, which are quite impressive.
Many people might not be familiar with Spain’s industrial brands; the ones we encounter most often are probably fast-fashion giants like Zara, not necessarily Spanish machine tool brands. But in reality, Spain has some companies that are world-renowned heavyweights. For example, in the medical field, there’s Grifols . This company is a global leader in plasma-derived products and transfusion diagnostic equipment, with very high technological barriers. Their products are distributed in over 100 countries, and many hospitals rely on their technology. It feels like the ‘Huawei’ of the pharmaceutical world—a classic case of a company that quietly makes a fortune.

Another area that surprised me is machine tools. We might typically think that German and Japanese machine tools are the best, but Spain’s machine tool manufacturing industry, especially in the Basque Country, is incredibly strong. Take DANOBATGROUP and the CORREA Group, for example. They produce large-scale, high-precision machine tools specifically for the aerospace, automotive, and energy industries. It’s likely that some precision components for Airbus and Boeing are processed using machines that are Made in Spain. The level of technology involved is by no means low.
To give everyone a better idea, I’ve compiled a simple list of a few representative companies and their fields, which are key to Spanish medical device exports:
| Company Name | Main Field | Industry Position |
| Grifols, S.A. | Plasma-derived products, transfusion diagnostics | Top 3 globally |
| Talgo | High-speed trains, railway equipment | Unique tilting train technology |
| MONDRAGON Corporation | Diversified industrial group | Spain’s largest cooperative corporation |
| INDRA | Information technology, defense, transportation | Leading Spanish technology company |
The list above is just the tip of the iceberg. It feels like Spain’s industrial system is like an iceberg, and what we see is only a small part above the water. These companies not only provide a large number of high-quality jobs but are also crucial pillars of the Spanish economy. Does anyone else know of other powerhouse companies native to Spain? Feel free to share and add to the list—it would really broaden my horizons as an industry enthusiast!
