For all the newcomers to Spain, are you often overwhelmed by the various numbers? Especially when going to the doctor or handling paperwork, someone always asks for your ‘Número de la Seguridad Social’, and you have no idea which number that is.
Today, I’m sharing the lessons I’ve learned the hard way, so you can understand it all after reading this post!
NUSS vs. NAF: What’s the Difference?
Simply put, both terms essentially refer to the same number, but they are used differently depending on the stage. You can think of it as your unique identification number within the social security system; it’s unique to you and lasts a lifetime.
NUSS: This is your initial “Social Security Affiliation Number.” You need to apply for it if you plan to work, study, or reside legally in Spain and need access to social security benefits. It’s like a provisional number that establishes your identity within the social security system.
NAF: When you start your first job and your employer registers you for social security, your NUSS is “activated” and becomes your NAF. From this moment on, you officially begin contributing to Spain’s social security system. So, if you are currently working, your number is the NAF.
So, the conclusion is: NUSS = NAF. They are just different names for the same number depending on your status. Don’t get confused anymore!
Where Can I Find My Social Security Number?
This number typically appears on many important documents, so it’s not hard to find. If you can’t find a physical copy, you can also check online.
Physical Cards and Documents: The most direct place to look is on your health card (Tarjeta Sanitaria). It’s usually located below your name or on the back. Additionally, it will definitely be on your work contract, payslip (nómina), or your Vida Laboral report.

Online Search: If you don’t have any documents on hand, don’t worry! You can go to the Social Security’s e-Office website (Sede Electrónica de la Seguridad Social) to check. You’ll need a digital certificate (Certificado Digital), Cl@ve PIN, or to log in via SMS. For instructions on the process, you can follow this guide on how to check your health card number. Once logged in, look for the service “Duplicado de Documento de Afiliación” to download an official document that clearly shows your number.
Summary of Common Lookup Methods
