Just moved to Spain, and all the different numbers can really make your head spin! Your NIE, Social Security number, tax number… A few days ago, I wanted to book an appointment with my family doctor and suddenly realized I couldn’t find my health card number anywhere. I had no idea where I’d put the physical card and was in a total panic. After a frantic afternoon, I finally figured it out. I’m sharing my experience for anyone who might need it, hoping it helps!
This number is actually crucial. It’s not just for seeing a doctor; you might also need it for job hunting and many other administrative procedures. Forgetting it can be a real hassle, but thankfully, there are several ways to find it. You can choose the method that’s most convenient for you.

Where Can I Find My Social Security Number?
Method 1: Check Your Nómina (Payslip)
This is the most straightforward method! If you work in Spain, your company’s monthly payslip will definitely have it. It’s usually in the personal information section, along with your name and NIE. Look for a label like Nº de Afiliación a la S.S. or something similar; the string of numbers that follows is your Social Security number. This is how I found mine—I just looked through my email for an electronic payslip, and there it was. A real lifesaver!
Method 2: Online Lookup
If you have a digital certificate installed on your computer or are registered with the Cl@ve system, it’s even more convenient. You can check it directly on the Social Security e-Office website. Although the website interface can be a bit complex, you can still find it by following the steps for the Spanish medical card number. The advantage of this method is that you can not only find the number but also download an official certificate.
Here are some common ways to find it:
| Method | What You’ll Need | Pros | Cons |
| Payslip (Nómina) | Company payslip | Fastest method | Only for those currently employed |
| Online System | Digital certificate or Cl@ve | Most comprehensive info | Requires initial setup |
| Old Medical Documents | Old appointment slips, medical records | Convenient, easy to check | Requires having kept old documents |
| Phone or Social Security Office | ID documents | Official assistance | Potential long waits |
Method 3: Look Through Old Documents
This is a more low-tech solution. Have you ever received any letters from the Social Security office? Or what about old appointment slips (cita), lab reports, or other documents from doctor visits? Your Social Security number is usually printed on them. A friend of mine found theirs on an old appointment slip. So, it really pays to get into the habit of keeping important documents. In any case, don’t panic. The number isn’t lost forever; there’s always a way to find it! Wishing you the best of luck! 😉
