As someone relatively new to Spain, I’ve always been curious about the healthcare system here. I recently came across some interesting statistics on the number of hospitals in Spain across its autonomous communities, so I’ve compiled them to share and discuss with you all.
We often hear that regions like Madrid and Barcelona have excellent resources, and this data seems to support that. Whether for healthcare needs or work, it’s always helpful to understand the hospital rankings in Spain and the distribution of medical resources in your own community.
Overview of Hospital Numbers in Spain
First things first, hospitals in Spain are divided into two types: public and private. According to the latest data, there are nearly 800 hospitals nationwide. Interestingly, the number of private hospitals actually exceeds that of public ones, which might contradict many people’s initial impressions. However, public hospitals are typically larger in scale and have more beds, shouldering the primary functions of the national healthcare system.

Hospital Rankings by Autonomous Community
Now for the part you’ve been waiting for: which community has the most hospitals? I’ve compiled the top-ranking communities into a table for an easy comparison:
| Autonomous Community | Total Hospitals | Public Hospitals | Private Hospitals |
| Catalonia | 215 | 67 | 148 |
| Andalusia | 149 | 49 | 100 |
| Madrid | 110 | 35 | 75 |
| Valencia | 83 | 24 | 59 |
As the table shows, Catalonia is in a league of its own, leading by a significant margin in both total and private hospital numbers—hardly surprising for one of Spain’s wealthiest regions. Andalusia, with its large area and population, reasonably ranks second. As the capital, Madrid has a high concentration of medical resources, placing it among the top for hospitals in Spain and securing its high-ranking spot.
Of course, the number of hospitals is just one metric and doesn’t fully represent the quality of medical care. A single large general hospital can certainly offer more comprehensive services than several small specialized clinics. Nevertheless, this data provides a good overview of a region’s basic healthcare infrastructure. What are your thoughts on these rankings? Do you find medical services in your area convenient?
