Having recently moved to Spain, I’ve been curious about the healthcare system here. You never know when you might get a headache or a fever, so it’s good to know where to go. I was chatting with a friend the other day about how many hospitals there are in Spain and the split between public and private, so I did some research online. I’m sharing what I found and would love to hear about your experiences.
According to some of the latest data from the Spanish Ministry of Health and the National Statistics Institute on the number of hospitals in Spain, the total number of hospitals across the country is around 800. This might not sound like a lot, but considering Spain’s population, the coverage is actually quite high. What’s most interesting is the ratio of public to private hospitals.

Public vs. Private: An Interesting Balance
The data I found on the number of hospitals in Spain shows that there are actually more private hospitals than public ones in Spain’s hospital network. However, this doesn’t mean private healthcare is dominant. In terms of the number of beds and the complexity of cases handled, the public hospital system is the absolute backbone. Essentially, the large, comprehensive hospitals capable of handling all sorts of complex and rare diseases are the public ones.
A Quick Data Comparison
I’ve organized the data I found into a simple table for easy reference:
| Hospital Type | Percentage of Total | Key Features |
| Public Hospitals | 45% | Large scale, comprehensive departments, cover emergencies and major illnesses, primary provider for the national health system. |
| Private Hospitals | 55% | Generally smaller, often specialized, shorter waiting times for appointments, better service experience, typically require private health insurance. |
So, while private hospitals are more numerous, public hospitals are the cornerstone in terms of ‘strength’ and ‘capacity’. For minor ailments, most people, unless in a great hurry or with excellent private insurance, still go to a public hospital’s emergency room or see their family doctor. My personal feeling is that although you sometimes have to wait at public hospitals, they are truly reliable when it matters most. Plus, according to Spain hospital rankings, the doctors’ expertise is very high. Which type of hospital do you usually go to? Any recommendations or experiences to avoid? Let’s discuss!
