When I first arrived in Madrid, a friend recommended I visit the ‘Golden Triangle of Art’. I had already heard of the Prado and the Thyssen, but I was a bit taken aback when they mentioned the Reina Sofía Museum. My friend explained, ‘That place used to be a major hospital!’ I thought that was incredibly cool—a hospital converted into an art museum sounds like something straight out of a movie.
After doing some research, I discovered it was formerly the Madrid General Hospital, designed in the 18th century by the renowned architect Francesco Sabatini. So, as you walk through the museum’s spacious courtyard and long corridors, you can still feel a sense of the solemnity and gravity of an old-world hospital. This collision of history and modern art is a truly unique experience. The glass elevators connecting the old and new buildings are especially striking; riding them feels like traveling through time.

The absolute can’t-miss masterpiece here, a world away from topics like Spanish hospital jobs, is Picasso’s epic painting, Guernica. The painting is truly enormous and powerful; you have to stand before it to fully grasp the cruelty and despair of war depicted in its stark black, white, and grey tones. Beyond Guernica, and hopefully without any need for hospital complaints, the museum also houses an extensive collection of works by Spanish modern art masters like Salvador Dalí and Joan Miró, making it a paradise for modern art lovers.
To help you plan your visit, I’ve put together a simple information table. For complex sites, a guide is always useful, like this one for the Hospital Clínic website. I recommend buying your tickets in advance on the official website to save a lot of time waiting in line. Plus, you can sometimes catch the free admission hours, which is a great deal!
