Lately, I’ve been researching international schools in Madrid and Barcelona for my child, and my head is spinning. It seems the main curricula advertised are IB and AP. Previously, I didn’t know much about these options, like IB international schools in Spain, and now that I have to make a choice, I feel a bit lost.
From what I’ve read in school brochures, IB seems to be a more complete and systematic high school program. Students have to study both humanities and sciences, and also complete the CAS component, which seems to demand a lot in terms of all-around ability. On the other hand, AP feels more like university-level preparatory courses, allowing students to select a few subjects based on their interests and strengths, which seems more flexible. I’ve read online that the IB is considered more prestigious, but it’s also much harder and more stressful.

IB vs. AP: How to Choose?
I’ve spent some time summarizing the apparent differences between the two programs. I’m not sure if my understanding is correct, so I’d appreciate it if you could take a look:
| Feature | IB Program | AP Program |
| Structure | A complete two-year high school curriculum. | Single-subject, university-level preparatory courses, chosen as needed. |
| Difficulty | High overall difficulty, many subjects, requires well-rounded abilities. | High difficulty per subject, but courses are optional, allowing students to play to their strengths. |
| Assessment | Internal assessments + global final exams, includes the Extended Essay (EE) and Theory of Knowledge (TOK). | A single, end-of-year global exam. |
| Recognition | Extremely high recognition from universities worldwide, especially favored by European universities. | Extremely high recognition in the US, can be exchanged for university credits. |
Some Personal Concerns
My main points of hesitation are:
- My child is stronger in some subjects than others; they do okay in sciences but really struggle with humanities. If they enroll in the IB program, I’m worried they’ll be dragged down by their weaker subjects, leading to a poor overall score. This could become overwhelmingly stressful and cause them to lose interest in learning.
- While AP is flexible, I’m concerned its lack of a comprehensive system might result in my child having a narrow range of knowledge. Additionally, it seems that American schools are less common in Spain compared to British/IB schools like Kensington School, so are our choices more limited?
- When it comes to future university applications, is an IB Diploma more advantageous, or are a few high-scoring AP results more persuasive? Especially if the goal is a university in Europe or the UK, is IB the only viable option, considering the IB scores in Spain?
I’m sincerely asking for advice from experienced parents on this forum! Did your children study the IB or AP program? What was your actual experience like? When it came to university applications, which one did universities seem to value more? Or, to put it another way, which system is more beneficial for a child’s development and integration here in Spain? Any piece of information would be incredibly helpful. Thank you all in advance!
