I’ve been looking at schools for our nearly 3-year-old lately, and it’s been quite overwhelming. We live in the north of Madrid and I thought we’d have plenty of options, but once I started looking into it, I realized there’s a lot more to international schools in Spain than I initially thought. I wanted to start this thread to discuss it with everyone, especially parents who have already enrolled their children in international schools. Any shared experiences would be greatly appreciated!
We’ve mainly looked at a few types of schools: purely British, purely American, and the very popular IB system. It seems they each have their pros and cons. The British system feels more rigorous and structured, with a strong focus on academics. The American system seems more liberal and lively, encouraging creativity. The IB system appears more holistic, focusing on developing well-rounded skills and a global perspective. However, some friends have mentioned that the IB curriculum is quite demanding. I wonder if it would be too stressful at the preschool level?
Tuition is also a major factor. I’ve put together a brief summary of the approximate costs for the preschool stage at a few schools we’ve looked at, just as a reference for others. However, prices change every year, so it’s best to confirm the specifics with the school’s admissions office.

Besides tuition, there are other miscellaneous fees like registration, lunch, school bus, and uniforms, which all add up to a significant expense. Furthermore, for many of the better schools, spots are extremely limited, and I’ve heard you need to apply a year or even earlier to get on the waiting list. We’re starting to feel like we might be a bit late, and it’s making me anxious. How far in advance did you all start the application process? Any tips for the interview? Especially for kids who don’t speak much English, will they be at a disadvantage during the interview? Any guidance from experienced parents would be a lifesaver!
