Lately, I’ve noticed many friends on the forum discussing schooling for their children, especially concerning international preschools, and the information seems quite scattered. As I’ve just done a lot of research for my own child’s schooling, I’ve compiled my findings and tips here, hoping to help others in need.
Choosing a school for your child can be overwhelming, especially in Spain where spots at good international schools are highly competitive. We primarily focused on schools in major cities like Madrid and Barcelona, as educational resources are more concentrated there. The so-called ‘rankings’ don’t really have an official, absolute standard; they are often based on a combination of IB/A-Level results, school reputation, and parent feedback. For the preschool level, I personally place more importance on teaching philosophy, faculty quality, facilities, and campus atmosphere.

Overview of Popular International Preschools
Below are a few schools I’ve looked into closely. They all have excellent reputations for early childhood education but each has its own focus. It’s important to note that the tuition fees mentioned are just approximate ranges and are subject to annual adjustments. They typically do not include registration fees, meal plans, bus services, or other miscellaneous costs.
Madrid Area
- Runnymede College: A leader in British education, known for its rigorous academic standards. It’s a top consideration for parents who want their child on an academically-focused path from an early age. However, admission is highly competitive, and the waiting list is very long.
- The English Montessori School: This school uses the Montessori method, respecting each child’s individuality and developmental pace. The atmosphere is relatively relaxed and free. It has a large, beautiful campus.
- International College of Spain: A well-established IB World School in Madrid, offering the full continuum from PYP to DP. It’s highly international with a very diverse student body.
Barcelona Area
- Benjamin Franklin International School: A representative of American education, focusing on nurturing creativity and critical thinking. The school offers a wide variety of extracurricular activities.
- The British School of Barcelona: A large British school with multiple campuses in Barcelona. It boasts first-class facilities and has strong programs in sports and the arts.
- St. Peter’s School: This school is unique. While it offers an international curriculum, it also places a strong emphasis on teaching Catalan and Spanish, making it suitable for families who want their children to become proficient in local languages as well.
Key Points for School Selection and Application
Beyond reading recommendations, visiting the schools in person is crucial! Experiencing the school’s atmosphere firsthand and observing the students and teachers is more informative than any brochure. Also, be sure to apply early. Many schools start accepting applications in September or October of the preceding year, and for some popular international preschools in Spain, you might even need to get on the waiting list several years in advance.
| Consideration Factor | Description |
| Curriculum | British, American, or International Baccalaureate (IB)? This determines future educational pathways. |
| Location | Consider the daily commute time for drop-off and pick-up, or whether bus service is available. |
| Language Environment | Is it a full English immersion or a bilingual/multilingual environment? This significantly impacts a child’s language development. |
| Tuition Budget | Annual tuition fees range from €8,000 to €20,000+, offering a wide range of options. |
There is no ‘best’ school, only the school that is ‘best-suited’ for your child. I recommend visiting several schools, speaking with the admissions officers, and listening to feedback from parents of current students. I hope everyone successfully finds the right school for their little one! Other experienced parents are also welcome to share their insights and experiences!
