The weather is getting better and better, and it’s that time of year again to plan a summer getaway! Renting a place for vacation every year just doesn’t feel right, so I’ve been thinking about buying a small apartment by the sea. I could use it for my own holidays and maybe rent it out for a little extra income when it’s empty. I’ve done some research and found it’s quite a complex topic, so I wanted to share my findings and get your thoughts.
Overview of Prices in Major Hotspots
I’ve mainly focused on a few traditional holiday destinations, like the Costa del Sol in the south, the Costa Blanca in the Valencian Community, and the islands. It seems like the differences between each place are quite significant.
Costa del Sol: Places like Marbella and Estepona are famous, and of course, their prices are the most robust. A decent two-bedroom apartment with a sea view starts at around €300,000. Newer ones in good communities can easily go for €400,000-€500,000. I feel this area is more suited for those with a larger budget, as the amenities are excellent and it’s very international.
Costa Blanca: Areas around Alicante and Torrevieja are much more affordable. I’ve seen many options in the €150,000-€250,000 range. While they might not be frontline beach properties, they’re often just a ten-minute walk to the sea and usually have community pools. This price range seems accessible for most average families, and the value for money looks good.
The Islands: Places like Mallorca or Tenerife offer a completely different vibe. Prices in some popular areas of Mallorca are approaching Marbella levels, but the scenery is truly unbeatable. Southern Tenerife has more moderate prices and a year-round holiday climate, which could mean a shorter off-season for rentals. Of course, the initial [cost of buying property in Spain] is a major factor. It’s also worth keeping an eye on the general trends for Spanish property prices. The main drawback is that travel to and from the mainland isn’t as easy, unlike some mainland cities where Spanish property prices are also soaring.
Budget Comparison: What Can You Buy?
I’ve put together a simple table to give a clearer idea of what different budgets can get you:
| Budget Range | Possible Areas | Property Type |
| €150k - €250k | Costa Blanca, Costa Cálida (Murcia) | Resale 2-bedroom apartment, a bit far from the beach |
| €250k - €400k | Costa del Sol, Costa Blanca | Newer apartment or townhouse |
| €400k+ | Costa del Sol, Mallorca | New, high-quality apartment with a large terrace |

I feel that current market prices are still high, especially in popular tourist areas. Inflation and rising construction material costs are driving factors. I’m a bit hesitant; on one hand, I think ‘buy now, enjoy sooner,’ but on the other, I’m afraid of buying at the peak. That said, a holiday home is also a lifestyle purchase. As long as it brings joy to my family and me, maybe it shouldn’t be judged solely on financial returns. I’m wondering if there are any members here who have already bought a holiday home, or are also looking? Do you think now is a good time to buy? Or are there any hidden gem locations I haven’t mentioned? Please share your experiences!
