After living in Barcelona for a while, I’ve grown a bit tired of the hustle and bustle of the big city and have started looking at some of the surrounding towns. After some searching, I’ve found that Tarragona is a really great place. It’s not far from Barcelona, easily accessible by train, and it’s a historic city with ancient Roman ruins. The pace of life is slow and relaxed, with a distinct Mediterranean vibe.
The key thing is, the property prices here are so much more affordable than in Barcelona! For the same budget that might only get you a small apartment in Barcelona, you can find a place with a balcony or even a terrace in Tarragona. I’ve been browsing listings on Idealista and Fotocasa recently, and I’m getting really excited. It feels like there’s a lot of potential here, whether for investment or for living. I’m wondering if there’s anyone else on this forum who is also looking at Tarragona property or has already settled here? Would you be willing to share your experiences?

A Brief Analysis of Popular Areas in Tarragona
I’ve done some research and put together a simple summary of a few areas I’m interested in. I’d also love to hear everyone’s opinions. Each area has its own pros and cons, which makes the decision quite tough.
Areas I’m Focusing On
- Part Alta : Living within the ancient Roman walls sounds so cool! You step out into narrow alleys, charming restaurants, and historical sites. But the downsides are also clear: the buildings are generally old, many don’t have elevators, and parking is extremely difficult.
- Eixample : This is Tarragona’s city center, the most convenient area for daily life. It has everything—shops, banks, markets—and it’s close to the beach and the train station. The apartment buildings here are more modern with better amenities, but of course, the prices are also among the highest in the city.
- Near Platja del Miracle: Sea view properties! Who wouldn’t love that? Waking up to the Mediterranean Sea every day sounds so therapeutic. However, properties here are likely very seasonal, possibly noisy in the summer, and you have to be mindful of issues like dampness and corrosion from the sea breeze. I wonder if the maintenance costs are high?
Below is a simple comparison I’ve put together. It might not be comprehensive, so please feel free to add to it or make corrections.
| Area | Pros | Cons |
| Part Alta | Rich historical atmosphere, charming lifestyle | Old buildings, difficult parking, likely no elevator |
| Eixample | Convenient for daily life, good amenities, great transport links | Relatively high prices, can be noisy |
| Beach Area | Unbeatable sea views, strong holiday vibe | Highly seasonal, noisy in summer, prone to dampness |
Right now, I’m leaning towards finding an apartment in Eixample that’s not too far from the beach but is still relatively quiet. My budget is around €200,000 to €300,000, and I’m hoping to find a two or three-bedroom place. What kind of property do you think I can find in Tarragona with this budget? Or are there any other hidden gem areas I might have overlooked, like Nou Eixample or the surrounding small towns? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
