Having recently moved to Spain, my child’s schooling has become our top priority. While public schools are free, we’re considering private international schools, especially those with a British curriculum, for future prospects and language reasons. I’ve done some research and found there’s a lot of information to sift through. I’m starting this thread to share my initial findings and invite experienced parents to add their insights.
Why Choose a British Education?
The main reason for choosing a British education is its global recognition. The British curriculum, particularly the IGCSE and A-Level qualifications, are essentially a ‘golden ticket’ for applying to top universities worldwide, especially in the UK, Commonwealth countries, and the United States. Furthermore, British education emphasizes critical thinking and independent research skills, which I feel are crucial for developing a child’s overall abilities. Compared to the local Spanish system, it offers a superior English-language environment and greater cultural diversity. With classmates from all over the world, children can develop a global perspective from a young age.

What Are the Curriculum and Tuition Fees Like?
British schools in Spain typically follow the National Curriculum for England. In simple terms, the educational path is as follows: primary school, followed by secondary school where students study for the IGCSEs. The final two years are dedicated to the crucial A-Level program, the results of which are used for university applications. Some top-tier British schools also offer the IB Diploma Programme (IBDP) as an alternative to A-Levels, which is known for its greater breadth and rigor.
As for tuition fees, this is definitely a major concern for everyone. To put it plainly, it’s not cheap. Fees can vary significantly depending on the school’s location and reputation. I’ve compiled a rough annual fee range (in Euros) to give you a general idea:
| School Stage | Annual Tuition |
| Nursery & Primary | 7,000 - 15,000 |
| Secondary | 10,000 - 18,000 |
| Sixth Form (High School) | 12,000 - 25,000 |
Note: This is just a rough estimate. For specific fees, you must check the school’s official website.
How to Choose and Apply for Your Child?
The application process is generally quite similar across schools. You’ll typically need to submit an application form, your child’s previous school records, and identification documents. Most schools require an entrance exam, mainly assessing English and math skills. Some also conduct interviews to evaluate a child’s communication skills and personality to see if they are a good fit for a British private school. It’s advisable to start preparing and applying at least a year in advance, as spots at good schools are highly competitive; it’s common for them to be in high demand. When choosing, beyond looking at rankings and university placement rates, it’s best to visit the campus in person. This allows you to get a feel for the school’s atmosphere, facilities, and teaching staff. After all, your child will spend a significant amount of time there, and an environment they enjoy is more important than anything. Do you have any school recommendations? Or any pitfalls to avoid?
