When I first came to Spain, I knew nothing beyond hola and gracias. I had to use hand gestures just to buy groceries at the supermarket, which was really embarrassing. Taking a class wasn’t flexible for my schedule, so I decided to dive into some textbooks on my own to get started. After some trial and error, I’ve gained a bit of experience. Today, I’m sharing a few of the excellent self-study Spanish textbooks I’ve used, hoping to help others on the same self-learning journey.
Beginner & Intermediate Level
“Modern Spanish” (现代西班牙语)
This series is a cornerstone text for Spanish learners, known for its comprehensive approach. Its strength lies in its complete and rigorous grammar system, with concepts explained in great detail. By following it step-by-step, you’ll build a very solid foundation. The downside is that some of the content in these Spanish textbooks can feel a bit dated, with dialogue scenarios that aren’t very practical, and the exercises in these Spanish learning materials can be less engaging. If you’re an academically-minded learner who loves to master grammar systematically, this ‘Modern Spanish’ series is definitely your top choice.
“Nuevo Sueña” (走遍西班牙语)
This is a series imported directly from Spain, and its biggest advantage is its lively and practical content. The lessons are centered around everyday situations like renting an apartment, asking for directions, and visiting a doctor, so you can apply what you learn immediately. The layout and illustrations are also more modern, making the learning process less dull. I personally prefer this series because it quickly improves your listening and speaking skills, building the confidence to start conversations. The drawback is that its grammar explanations are not as systematic or in-depth as ‘Modern Spanish’, so you might need to supplement your learning with other resources for self-study Spanish.

DELE Exam Preparation
If your goal is to obtain a DELE certificate, then in addition to foundational textbooks, dedicated prep books are essential.
“Preparación al DELE”
This is the officially recommended preparation series and is highly targeted. It provides specific practice for the four sections of the exam, helping you get familiar with the test format and question types. The mock exams in the book are very close in difficulty to the actual test, so working through them a few times before the exam is a huge help. It’s advisable to start your final push with this series at least 2-3 months in advance.
Here’s a quick summary of these books to help you choose based on your needs:
| Textbook Title | Pros | Cons | Best For |
| Modern Spanish (现西) | Most complete and rigorous grammar system | Dated content, less engaging | Grammar enthusiasts, learners seeking a solid foundation |
| Nuevo Sueña (走遍西班牙语) | Practical scenarios, lively and interesting content | Grammar explanations are less systematic | Learners focusing on speaking and practical application |
| Preparación al DELE | Highly targeted, closely mimics the real exam | Purely exam-oriented, can be dry | Students preparing for the DELE certificate |
There are no shortcuts in language learning, but choosing the right textbook can save you from taking many detours.
I hope my sharing has been helpful! Feel free to add any other great textbooks you’ve used in the comments. Let’s learn and improve together!
