When I first moved to Spain, my spoken Spanish was okay for daily situations, but in more formal settings, like dealing with the bank or government offices, I felt my grammar was full of holes and my expressions were often imprecise. I then decided to seriously brush up on my grammar. After trying several books, I’m sharing a few Spanish grammar textbooks that I found particularly helpful, hoping to assist others on their self-study journey.
Beginner-Friendly Series
For students who are just starting out or have a weak grammar foundation, I highly recommend the Uso de la gramática española series. This set is divided into beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels, covering the main grammar points from A1 to C1. Its layout is exceptionally clear: grammar explanations on the left page and corresponding exercises on the right, making it perfect for self-study. The explanations are rich with examples and don’t feel like a dry pile of theories. I started with the beginner book, and it was a tremendous help in building a solid grammar framework.

A Powerful Tool for Advanced Learners and Exam Prep
If you’re looking for Spanish textbooks and your level is already B1 or higher, or if you’re preparing for the DELE exam, then the Gramática de uso del español series is an undeniable classic. It’s also categorized by levels A, B, and C. Compared to the Uso series, the explanations in this Spanish textbook are more in-depth, and the exercises are more comprehensive, with many questions mirroring DELE exam formats. The B1-B2 book, in particular, provides a very thorough explanation of difficult topics like the subjunctive mood and the contrasts between various tenses. When I was preparing for the DELE B2, I went through this book at least twice, and it clarified many grammar points that I had previously been unsure about.
Textbook Feature Comparison
To give you a clearer comparison of these two mainstream textbooks for those who are self-studying Spanish, I’ve made a simple comparison table:
| Feature | Uso de la gramática española | Gramática de uso del español |
| Layout Style | Left-page explanation, right-page exercises; very clear | Chapter-based, more dense content |
| Explanation Depth | Easy to understand, suitable for beginners | More in-depth, suitable for advanced learners and exam prep |
| Exercise Difficulty | Foundation-building | Comprehensive and application-oriented, similar to exam format |
| Recommended For | Absolute beginners, those with a weak grammar foundation | B1+ level students, DELE candidates |
Learning grammar is a process that is easy requires patience. No single book is perfect; the key is to find one that suits your current level and learning style. For instance, I personally prefer to use Uso to build a foundation and then use Gramática de uso to advance my skills and fill in the gaps. I hope my experience can serve as a reference for you.
