Having recently arrived in Spain, I’m attending a language school but also want to use my spare time to study more on my own—after all, the DELE exam waits for no one. I’ve tried a bunch of Spanish learning apps on the market, and while some are genuinely great, others are… well, you know. Today, I want to share a few gems I couldn’t bring myself to delete from my phone, hoping to help those of you also struggling with the challenge of learning Spanish.
Tools for Mastering Vocabulary
Vocabulary is the foundation of everything, especially for the DELE B2 level and above, where the vocabulary requirement increases sharply. I highly recommend Anki. It’s not a traditional Spanish app but rather a flashcard tool based on the ‘spaced repetition’ learning method. You can create your own cards or download pre-made decks shared by others. Every day, the system pushes words that need reviewing based on your forgetting curve, making it incredibly efficient. While the interface is a bit basic, the results are undeniable. In comparison, apps like Duolingo feel more suited for absolute beginners to get a feel for the language; for serious exam prep, it’s a bit too game-like.
Focusing on Grammar and Listening
Grammar and listening are weak spots for many learners. For grammar, I frequently use SpanishDict. It’s more than just a dictionary; it’s incredibly convenient for looking up verb conjugations and provides detailed explanations and examples for many grammar points, making it very reliable. For listening, besides the traditional method of listening to news for Spanish exams, I found an interesting app called Lupa. It offers audio stories from Latin America and Spain with adjustable playback speeds and provides a real-time transcript for your Spanish exams, which is a great help for intensive listening practice. You can listen without the text first, then check the transcript to identify what you missed and study it repeatedly.
Here is a simple comparison of a few popular apps for your reference:
| App Name | Main Function | Pros | Cons |
| Anki | Spaced repetition for vocabulary | Highly efficient, very customizable | Requires time to create your own cards |
| SpanishDict | Dictionary, verb conjugations, grammar | Authoritative, comprehensive | Free version has ads |
| Lupa | Listening practice with stories | Includes transcripts, adjustable speed, engaging content | Content isn’t updated very frequently |
| Memrise | Gamified learning for words/phrases | Uses videos and native speaker audio | Advanced content requires payment |
No single app is a silver bullet. The best approach is to use a combination of them, choosing based on your current learning focus. For example, I’m currently focusing on vocabulary, so I primarily use Anki, with SpanishDict as a supplement. I hope everyone can find a study rhythm that works for them and earn their DELE/SIELE certificate soon! ¡Mucho ánimo a todos!
