Lately, I’ve seen many discussions on forums about children learning Spanish, especially how to get them started outside of Spain. My little one is also on this journey, and after some trial and error, I’ve gained a bit of experience. Today, I’d like to share a few authentic Spanish elementary school textbooks we’re using, hoping it can be a helpful reference for parents who are choosing learning materials.
I was quite lost at the beginning, not knowing where to start. Then, I took the advice of a friend who is a teacher in Spain and decided to use the same elementary school textbooks that Spanish children use. It turned out to be the right approach! The images, layout, and content design in these original textbooks are truly authentic, allowing children to be immersed in a genuine language environment and cultural context from a young age.

A Comparison of Mainstream Textbook Publishers
There are many educational publishers in Spain, with the main ones being Anaya, SM, Edelvives, and Santillana. We have primarily used materials from the first three, so I’ll briefly share my thoughts on them:
- Anaya: The content is very systematic and solid, with a substantial amount of exercises. It feels more aligned with traditional teaching methods, making it suitable for families who want to build a strong foundation. Their science textbooks are fantastic, with great illustrations, and can even be read as popular science books.
- SM: This publisher has a more lively style with many interactive and game-based designs, making it feel more modern. Their apps and online resources, like ‘Savia Digital,’ are excellent. Kids find them very engaging, which makes learning fun. We use SM for math, and it feels much more enjoyable than the traditional math books we’re used to.
- Edelvives: This one has a strong artistic flair! The textbooks are designed like picture books with beautiful aesthetics. If your child is interested in arts and humanities, this publisher is worth a look. Their ‘Lengua Castellana y Literatura’ textbooks feature classic literary selections.
How to Choose?

So, after all that, how do you decide? I’ve created a simple table to make comparison easier.
| Publisher | Features | Best for Children Who… |
| Anaya | Systematic, rigorous, plenty of exercises | Are preparing for exams or need a solid foundation |
| SM | Lively, fun, rich digital resources | Love interactive activities and may have shorter attention spans |
| Edelvives | Highly artistic, beautifully illustrated | Have a strong interest in humanities and arts |
There’s no single ‘best’ textbook; it all depends on your child’s learning style and interests. I suggest looking for sample pages of different Spanish textbooks online or buying one to try it out. For example, you could mix and match, using SM for math and Anaya for science to get the best of both worlds. Language learning is a long journey, not something accomplished overnight. Choosing the right materials can keep your child engaged and make the process much more effective. I hope all your kids enjoy learning Spanish! Do you have any other great textbook recommendations?
