I recently moved to Spain and language is still a big challenge. Whether for job hunting or daily communication, an official language certificate is definitely a plus. I’ve been researching the two main Spanish exams, DELE and SIELE, and found there’s a lot to consider. I’m sharing my findings to help others who might be in the same boat.
Most of my friends have taken the DELE. It’s the ‘classic’ choice—the most famous, officially certified by the Instituto Cervantes, and valid for life. However, it has clear drawbacks: it’s only offered a few times a year, you need to register far in advance, and it takes two to three months to get the results. For anyone needing a certificate urgently for residency permits, university applications, or jobs, the wait is a drag. Furthermore, with DELE, you must take all four sections (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) at once. If you fail one part, you fail the entire exam and have to start over, which is incredibly stressful, especially when you are self-studying Spanish.
Can’t Decide Which Exam to Take? DELE vs. SIELE
Later, I discovered SIELE, the ‘up-and-comer,’ which is much more flexible. It’s a computer-based exam with frequent test dates—available almost every week—and you get your results within three weeks. The best part is that you can choose to test only specific skills: listening, speaking, reading, or writing. You can focus on your weak areas, and the certificate is valid for two years. For students who only need to prove a specific ability or those who failed a single section of the DELE and need a quick certificate, SIELE is a lifesaver.
So, Which One Is Right for Me?

If you’re not in a hurry and want a prestigious, lifelong certificate, then go for DELE, especially if you’re self-studying Spanish. If you’re short on time or just need to prove your language level quickly, SIELE is definitely the more efficient option. Personally, I was in a rush to renew my residence permit, so I chose SIELE.
