When I first arrived in Spain, I was a complete beginner in Spanish and could only say “Hola.” I heard many people around me talk about how complicated Spanish grammar is and what a headache verb conjugations are, which honestly made me a bit discouraged. But after living here for about half a year, I discovered that if your goal for self-studying Spanish is just daily life and communication, then learning Spanish on your own is so much easier than you think! With this post, I want to share my personal experience with those of you who are still on the fence, hoping to give you a little confidence.
Why I Say Self-Studying Spanish Isn’t Difficult
Spanish pronunciation is incredibly straightforward! It’s basically phonetic—what you see is what you get. There are just five vowels: a, e, i, o, u, and their sounds are fixed, unlike in English where a single ‘a’ can be pronounced in several ways. Once you master the alphabet and a few special pronunciation rules, you can pretty much read any word you see, which gives you a great sense of accomplishment. This builds a solid foundation for speaking. Plus, Spanish and English share a vast number of words with Latin roots. If you have some basic English, you’ll find that many words look very similar, and you can often guess their meaning with high accuracy.

My Self-Study Tips
My method is simple: be bold, don’t be afraid of making mistakes, and imitate a lot. Initially, I just followed YouTube videos that taught basic conversations, like how to order food, ask for directions, and go shopping. Then, I just pushed myself to use it in real situations. It’s okay to make mistakes; most Spanish people are very friendly and happy to correct you. They might even be friendlier because you’re making an effort to speak their language. I also downloaded a few language exchange apps to chat with locals, who taught me many authentic expressions you can’t learn from textbooks. Remember, a language is for communication, not for exams; speaking it is what truly matters.
Here are some very practical phrases for beginners that I’ve compiled. You can start practicing with these:
| English | Spanish | Scenario |
| Hello / Thank you | Hola / Gracias | Universal phrases |
| How much is it? | ¿Cuánto cuesta? | Essential for shopping |
| I want this | Quiero esto | Ordering food, shopping |
| I don’t understand | No entiendo | When you can’t understand |
| Slower, please | Más despacio, por favor | Asking for help in conversation |
Don’t be intimidated by complex grammar rules. For those of us living in Spain, the most important thing is to be able to communicate and get things done. Start with the most basic and frequently used daily phrases to build confidence, and you’ll find yourself improving surprisingly fast. Once you have a solid foundation, it’s not too late to tackle the tougher parts like tenses and grammar. I hope everyone can bravely take that first step and enjoy the fun of communicating in Spanish! ¡Ánimo!
