Having just arrived in Spain, I feel that language is still the biggest hurdle. Recently, I’ve been thinking about getting a certification, partly to motivate myself to study systematically, and partly because an official certificate is always beneficial for future job hunting or residency applications. After some research, I found that the most discussed exams are DELE and SIELE. Today, I’m sharing the homework I’ve done, hoping to help others who are also struggling with this decision.

DELE vs. SIELE: What’s the Real Difference?
Simply put, both DELE and SIELE are authoritative, globally recognized exams officially certified by the Cervantes Institute. However, they have significant differences in format and purpose.
- DELE: It’s more like the traditional language proficiency tests we’re familiar with, such as IELTS or TOEFL. You need to register for a specific level, and if you pass, you get a lifetime valid certificate for that level. If you don’t pass… you’ll just have to try again next time. Therefore, before registering for the Spanish certificate, you must be sure of your level, or you could easily waste your money.
- SIELE: This is a newer and more flexible exam. It uses a point-based system; after the test, you receive a score corresponding to the CEFR levels A1-C1. This means there’s
no ‘failing’ in the traditional sense—you always get a result. The SIELE certificate is valid for 5 years, making it more suitable for those who need proof of their language skills for short-term goals, like university applications.
How to Choose? It Depends on Your Needs!
Which exam to choose depends entirely on your personal goals. I’ve put together a simple table for your reference:
| Feature | DELE Spanish Language Diploma | SIELE International Spanish Language Assessment |
| Certificate Validity | Lifetime | 5 years |
| Exam Format | Paper-based test | Entirely computer-based |
| Registration | Register for a specific level | Register for a comprehensive test, graded by score |
| Result Speed | Approx. 2-3 months | As fast as 3 weeks |
| Best for | Long-term proof, immigration/citizenship, personal development | University applications, short-term job seeking, quick proficiency validation |
Personally, I’m leaning towards challenging the DELE B2 directly. Although the preparation period is longer and it’s more difficult, the ‘one-and-done’ aspect is very appealing. I’ve also heard that many companies and official institutions in Spain prefer the DELE. Of course, if you’re in a hurry to apply to a university or just want to test your current level, SIELE is definitely the better choice. What about you all? How did you choose, or do you have any preparation tips to share? I’d love to hear them!
