I’ve been in Spain for a little while, and although I can get by with some stumbling in daily conversations, I recently found that many internship applications require official proof of language proficiency. Just saying I ‘can speak Spanish’ isn’t very convincing, so it seems getting a certificate is necessary. After some research, I found that the main options are DELE and SIELE. Today, I’m sharing what I’ve learned, and I welcome anyone with experience to add their thoughts!
DELE vs. SIELE: Which One Should You Choose?
Simply put, DELE is like the ‘IELTS’ of the Spanish world. It’s an official certificate issued by the Instituto Cervantes, boasts the highest global recognition, and is valid for life. The downside is that it’s quite traditional, with exams held only a few times a year. Plus, registering for a Spanish certificate and getting your results takes a long time. If you don’t pass, you just have to wait for the next opportunity.
SIELE, on the other hand, is more like the ‘Duolingo English Test’ or TOEFL. It’s fully computer-based, provides results quickly, and offers much more flexibility in scheduling. It’s not a ‘pass’ or ‘fail’ exam; instead, you receive a score based on your performance, which corresponds to a level from A1 to C1. However, it’s important to note that the SIELE certificate is only valid for 5 years.

Key Differences Between the Two Exams
To make it clearer, I’ve created a simple table for a side-by-side comparison:
| Feature | DELE (Diploma of Spanish as a Foreign Language) | SIELE (International Assessment Service for the Spanish Language) |
| Certificate Validity | Lifetime | 5 years |
| Exam Format | Written paper + oral interview | Fully online and computer-based |
| Results Speed | Approx. 2-3 months | Up to 3 weeks |
| Exam Levels | Register for a specific level; must pass to receive the certificate for that level | Comprehensive exam; level is determined by score |
| Registration Flexibility | Fixed dates, requires booking well in advance | Flexible, can book a slot anytime |
Personal Recommendations
So, how do you choose? Here’s my take:
- If you’re not in a rush for a certificate and have a clear goal, like aiming for a B2 level, and you want a qualification that lasts a lifetime, then go for DELE. Although the preparation period is long, its value is undeniable. It’s a powerhouse for future university applications or formal job searches.
- If you’re like me and need proof of language skills quickly for an internship, a short-term course application, or just want to gauge your learning progress, SIELE is definitely the better choice. It’s flexible, fast, and gives you an official assessment of your level quickly. Even if you don’t do as well as you’d hoped, you can retake individual sections you’re weak in, which is a very user-friendly feature.
Neither certificate is definitively ‘better’ than the other; it’s all about what suits your needs. DELE is like a marathon that requires long-term preparation, while SIELE is more like a sprint focused on efficiency. I hope my little bit of research helps those of you who are also undecided!
