Hola a todos! I’ve been in Spain for almost a year, self-studying Spanish with apps and TV shows. I can handle daily conversations like shopping, but I struggle with vocabulary and grammar when it comes to handling official matters or having deeper conversations. I’ve been thinking about getting a certificate to test my actual level and set a goal for myself; otherwise, my learning feels a bit unstructured.
When it comes to Spanish certificates, the first one that comes to mind is DELE. It seems to be the most authoritative, globally recognized, and valid for life. However, I’ve also heard that the DELE exam is quite traditional, requiring separate preparation for listening, speaking, reading, and writing. It’s only held a few times a year, so if you miss a date, you have to wait a long time. For a self-learner like me, I’m not sure if tackling DELE directly would be too difficult, especially the speaking and writing parts, as I don’t have a tutor to guide me and feel a bit unsure.

Then I did some research online and found another exam called SIELE. From the description, it seems much more flexible. You can register online, take it almost anytime, and it’s a computer-based test with quick results. Unlike DELE, where you have to pass all four sections at once, with SIELE you can test individual skills or a combination. This seems more friendly for someone like me who just wants to check their ability in a specific area. I also heard that the SIELE score corresponds to a CEFR level, meaning your score proves you’ve reached a B1 or B2 level, for example. It’s valid for 5 years, which is more than enough for university applications or job hunting.
I’ve put together a simple comparison of DELE and SIELE based on my understanding. I’m not sure if it’s completely accurate, so please feel free to take a look and add anything I might have missed:
| Feature | DELE | SIELE |
| Organizing Body | Instituto Cervantes | Co-created by Instituto Cervantes, the University of Salamanca, the National Autonomous University of Mexico, etc. |
| Exam Format | Paper-based, with a face-to-face oral interview | Fully computer-based |
| Certificate Type | Pass/Fail, you receive a certificate for a specific level if you pass; otherwise, you get nothing. | Points-based, your language proficiency is evaluated based on your score. |
| Validity | Lifetime validity | 5 years |
| Flexibility | Fixed exam dates; all four skills must be tested together. | Book exams anytime; can test single or combined skills. |
So, when it comes to Spanish language certificates, I’m now torn. Should I go all-in and prepare for DELE, or should I take SIELE first to build some confidence? Also, besides these two, are there any other officially recognized language certificates available locally in Spain? For instance, are certificates from a university’s own language center equally accepted when applying for a master’s program at that same university or for local jobs? I’d be very grateful for any advice from those with experience!
