When I first arrived in Spain, my Spanish was basically zero. I stumbled just ordering food and had to rely on hand gestures. After a period of trial and error, I finally progressed from only knowing “Hola” and “Gracias” to being able to chat with the older ladies in my neighborhood. I recently took some time to compile my learning experiences and resources into a simple Spanish e-book in PDF format. I wanted to share it with friends on the forum who are also self-studying or planning to start, hoping it can help you avoid some common pitfalls.
My Self-Study Journey
The biggest mistake I made at the beginning was being too eager for quick results. I buried my head in thick grammar books, which only made me more confused—verb conjugations gave me a huge headache. Later, I adjusted my strategy and divided my learning into stages: focus on listening and speaking first, with reading and writing to follow. I started by mastering the basic pronunciation, then used various apps and Spanish TV shows for self-study Spanish to train my ear, imitate sounds, and develop a feel for the language. At this stage, don’t be afraid of making mistakes. Be thick-skinned Being bold and speaking up is key! You’ll find that Spaniards are incredibly forgiving when foreigners speak Spanish; they’re happy to correct you and will even applaud your small improvements.

Recommended Learning Resources and Tools
On the self-study journey, the right tools and textbooks can make all the difference. I’ve organized the resources I found useful into a table, so you can choose what works for you. I particularly recommend the Modern Spanish (现代西班牙语) textbook series. Although it’s a bit old, its structure is very comprehensive and great for systematic learning. Also, Duolingo is excellent for memorizing vocabulary in your spare moments, but don’t expect to become fluent using it alone.
| Category | Recommendation | Description |
| Textbooks | Modern Spanish (Books 1-4) | A classic Spanish textbook series in China, known for its clear grammar system. |
| Dictionary App | SpanishDict | Free, super convenient for definitions, example sentences, and verb conjugation lookups. |
| Listening | Coffee Break Spanish | A podcast format that covers from absolute beginner to advanced levels with practical content. |
| All-in-One Apps | Duolingo / Memrise | Gamified learning, great for memorizing words and short phrases. |
| TV Series | La Casa de Papel | An intense plot, good for practicing listening skills and picking up slang. |
This self-study guide for Spanish is mainly aimed at learners from absolute beginner to B1 level. It covers alphabet pronunciation techniques, basic grammar frameworks, methods for memorizing common vocabulary by category, and some of my personal favorite apps and YouTube channels. I wrote every single word myself, incorporating some of my own ‘tales of blood and tears’ from my learning process, hoping to make your journey a bit smoother. I’ve uploaded the PDF to Google Drive for you to download. Wishing you all the best in your Spanish studies! ¡Mucho éxito!
