As a newcomer to Spain, I got a BBVA bank account. I find the app quite user-friendly, but I was a bit confused about transfers at first, especially when it came to international and different types of transfers. I’ve spent some time looking into it and decided to share my findings to help other BBVA users.

Main BBVA Transfer Methods
Once you understand the logic, it’s actually quite simple. BBVA offers several main types of transfers, and you can choose the one that best suits your needs:
Bizum: This is highly recommended! It’s essentially Spain’s go-to mobile payment service. All you need is the recipient’s phone number to send money instantly, and with BBVA, it’s usually free of charge. It’s perfect for small payments among friends, like splitting a dinner bill or rent. The only downside is the daily and monthly transfer limits, so it’s not suitable for large amounts.
SEPA Transfers: This is the most common type of bank transfer. SEPA stands for Single Euro Payments Area, which includes most EU countries. For euro transfers within this area, the fees are very low or even free, and the processing time is fast, usually taking 1-2 business days. This is what we typically use to pay rent to a landlord or handle utility bills. You can do this in the app by selecting ‘Transferencia’ (Transfer) and entering the recipient’s IBAN.
International Transfers (Non-SEPA): If you need to send money to countries outside the SEPA zone, like China or the US, or transfer a currency other than euros, you’ll need to use this method. This type of transfer involves a SWIFT/BIC code, has higher fees, and takes longer to process—typically 3-5 business days or more. The fees are really not cheap, so unless it’s absolutely necessary, it’s best to check with BBVA’s contact number and avoid this option if possible.
Comparison of Transfer Methods
I made a simple table to help you see the differences more clearly:
| Transfer Type | Best For | Processing Time | Fees | Key Advantages |
| Bizum | Small payments between friends | Instant | Usually free | Extremely fast, convenient |
| SEPA Transfer | EUR transfers within the SEPA zone | 1-2 business days | Low or free | Standard for domestic/EU use |
| International Transfer | Cross-border, multi-currency | 3-5+ business days | Higher | Global reach |
A Few Important Tips
Finally, just a few more reminders. When making a transfer, always double- and triple-check the recipient’s IBAN and name. Spanish IBANs are long, and one wrong digit can send your money to the wrong place, which is a huge hassle to sort out! Also, if you’re making a large SEPA transfer, for something like buying a car, it’s best to do it on a business day in the morning. Transfers made after a certain cutoff time in the afternoon might be processed on the next business day. I hope this information is helpful! If there’s anything incorrect or you have something to add about BBVA bank, feel free to point it out and add your comments.
