I’ve just arrived in Spain and found that the expenses are a bit higher than I expected. With tuition and living costs, the financial support from my family is getting tight. I’m considering applying for a small student loan to help manage my cash flow. I was wondering if anyone on the forum has gone through this process? I’m mainly trying to understand how difficult it is for foreigners with a student residence permit to get a loan and which banks are more friendly towards us?

I’ve done some research online and noticed that many people mention the two major banks, BBVA and Santander. It seems they offer many financial products for young students, like youth accounts and credit cards. I’m not sure how open their loan services are to international students like me. Will they reject us outright because we don’t have a stable job or proof of income? Or would they require a Spanish local as a guarantor? That would be difficult for me, as I’ve just arrived and don’t have many connections.
A Preliminary Comparison of Bank Loan Products
To make it clearer, I’ve put together a simple table with the information I’ve gathered so far about Spanish loans and Spanish loan applications. It’s definitely not complete, so I hope experienced students can help add to or correct it:
| Bank | Pros | Potential Difficulties |
| **Santander ** | Partners with many universities, may have dedicated student loan programs | Approval can be strict, with requirements for account transaction history. It’s important to be wary of things like suspicious loans. |
| **BBVA ** | Many branches, user-friendly app, flexible financial products | Loan conditions for non-EU residents might be quite strict |
| CaixaBank | Reportedly good customer service for locals, comprehensive services | Policies for international students are unclear, limited information available |
| **Sabadell ** | Strong presence in certain regions | Also lacks clear information on loans for international students |
Besides these traditional national banks, I’m also wondering if there are any smaller regional or online banks that might be more flexible? I’ve heard that some online banks have much simpler and faster approval processes, but I don’t know if they offer loan services for students. If the interest rates are too high, it wouldn’t be worth it, since we students don’t have much income and the repayment pressure would be significant.
I’m sincerely asking for advice from those with experience! Has anyone successfully applied for a loan and can share their experience? For example, what documents did you need to prepare, what are the approximate interest rates, how long does the approval process take, and are there any banks we should definitely avoid? Any information would be extremely helpful. Thanks in advance, everyone!
