I recently needed to transfer some money from my UK account to make a small investment here in Spain. The process wasn’t overly complicated, but I did run into a few minor issues. Thinking that others on the forum might also need to transfer money from the UK to Spain, I decided to start this thread to share my experience. I hope it helps, and I welcome anyone with experience to join the discussion.
Preparations Before the Transfer
You’ll need to have the bank details for both accounts ready. On the UK side, I used Monzo, mainly for its convenience. In Spain, I used Santander. Regardless of which banks you use, the following information is essential:
- The recipient’s Spanish bank IBAN: This is the most crucial piece of information. It’s a long number starting with ‘ES’, which you can find in your banking app or online portal.
- Recipient’s name: This must match the name on your Spanish bank account exactly, without a single letter’s difference.
- The recipient bank’s SWIFT/BIC code: For example, Santander’s is
BSCHESMMXXX. This code identifies the bank and is equally important.
- Purpose of transfer: My transfer was for investment, so I truthfully stated “Inversión”. If you’re buying a house, it’s best to specify “Compra de vivienda”. Being honest about the purpose can help you avoid unnecessary complications, especially for large transfers, and it’s always good to be familiar with things like Spanish bank codes.
Choosing the Right Transfer Service
I compared a few options: traditional bank wire transfers, Wise, and Revolut. With traditional banks, transfers are slow and the fees and exchange rates aren’t great, so I ruled them out (speaking of banks, there’s big news about [BBVA’s acquisition of Sabadell]). Ultimately, I chose Wise over Revolut, mainly because for a large one-time transfer, Wise’s exchange rates and fees were more transparent overall.

Here’s a simple comparison table I put together that you can use as a reference:
| Transfer Method | Pros | Cons |
| Traditional Bank | Feels secure, suitable for very conservative individuals | High fees, poor exchange rates, slow |
| Wise | Good exchange rates, transparent fees, fast | Requires separate account registration and verification |
| Revolut | Fee-free allowance for small currency exchanges, lots of features | Fees can be higher for large transfers |
The money took less than 24 hours to arrive in my Santander account from my Monzo account via Wise, which was very smooth. The bank didn’t even call to inquire. On another note, this transfer was for an investment, but if you are thinking about buying property, you might be interested in Spanish bank loans. A key reminder for everyone: never use small, unknown platforms just to save a little trouble—fund safety should always be the top priority. I hope my experience can be a useful reference for you!
