I recently had to go through the hassle of getting a bank statement certificate for my student residency renewal and discovered that each bank has slightly different procedures, which led me to run into a few problems. So, I decided to compile the information I gathered, including how to get a Proof of Income, and share it with fellow forum members who might need it. Hopefully, this will help you avoid some common pitfalls.

What is a Bank Statement Certificate?
Simply put, a bank statement certificate is an official document issued by a bank that verifies your account’s financial activity and balance over a specific period. In Spain, this document is essential for many procedures; it’s practically unavoidable when renewing your residency permit, renting an apartment, applying for a visa, or getting a loan for a car or house. There are generally two types: a balance certificate (Certificado de Saldo), which only shows your account balance at a specific point in time, and a transaction history certificate (Certificado de Movimientos), which lists all transactions over a period. For most official applications, you’ll need a document that combines both, or simply the detailed transaction history.
How to Get It from Major Banks
The process is quite similar across all banks and can mainly be done in two ways: online via the app/website or in-person at a branch. The online method is usually more convenient, faster, and often free! The advantage of going to a branch is that staff can assist you, but you might have to wait in line, just like when getting a Certificate of Bank Account Ownership, and they will most likely charge a fee.
| Bank Name | Online Application | In-Person at Branch | Approximate Fee |
| Santander | Yes, in the “Documentos” (Documents) menu, look for “Certificados” (Certificates) | Yes | Free online, approx. €15-20 in-person |
| BBVA | Yes, the process is quite clear, search for “Certificado” | Yes | Free or a few euros online, more expensive in-person |
| CaixaBank | Yes, via CaixaBankNow, but it can sometimes be slow | Yes | Sometimes free online, approx. €18 in-person |
| Sabadell | Yes, under “Cuentas” (Accounts), find “Correspondencia y certificados” | Yes | Mostly free online, not cheap in-person |
It’s important to note that the PDF version downloaded online usually includes the bank’s digital signature and a verification code, making it legally equivalent to a document stamped at the branch. So, if you can, always opt for the online method—it saves time, effort, and money! For my own residency renewal, I just downloaded the PDF from the BBVA app, printed it, and submitted it without any issues.
Before you do anything, it’s a good idea to log into your online banking or app to see if there’s a direct option to request it, similar to how you might get a Proof of Bank Transfer. If you can’t find it or need a specific format, then it’s time to book an appointment at a branch. Also, when preparing your documents, double-check whether you need the statement for the last 3 or 6 months and make sure you select the correct date range. I hope this post is helpful, and I welcome others to share their experiences with different banks!
