Having just moved to Spain, opening a bank account has been a major headache. Traditional banks either have incredibly long queues or grill you with questions if you’ve just arrived, and their document requirements are complicated. A friend recommended N26, an online bank, saying it only takes a few minutes. I was a bit skeptical but decided to give it a try at home last night, and it’s true—I was all set up in just 8 minutes! I’m sharing my full experience here as a reference for anyone who might need it.
Why Choose N26?
Honestly, I was hesitant at first since it’s a bank with no physical branches. But after doing some research, I found out that N26 has a full German banking license, so deposits are protected, and it’s very popular throughout the EU. For me, the biggest advantages are:
- Super-fast account opening: The entire process is done on the mobile app, no need to leave your house or wait in line.
- No management fees: The basic Standard plan has a €0 monthly fee, which is more than enough for regular users like me.
- User-friendly interface: The app has a very modern design and is much easier to use than many traditional banking apps. You get instant notifications for every transaction.
- Works globally: You get a German IBAN, but it works perfectly in Spain. The exchange rates for card payments worldwide are excellent, with basically no fees.
What Do You Need to Prepare Before Applying?
The preparation is incredibly simple, a much better experience than gathering a mountain of documents for a traditional bank. I only needed the following items:
| Required Documents | See the detailed N26 account opening guide for more info |
| Valid residence permit | I used my Spanish TIE card, but a passport should also work. |
| A smartphone | You’ll need it to download the N26 app and for the video verification call. |
| A Spanish address | This is for receiving your physical bank card. A student dorm or rental address is fine. |
| A Spanish phone number | For receiving verification codes and linking to your account. |
Once you have these ready, you can start. I timed the whole process, and from downloading the app to getting verified, it really only took about 8 minutes. The most time-consuming part was the video verification, which involves a short chat in English with a support agent to confirm your identity.
A Walkthrough of the Opening Process
The whole process is as simple as signing up for any other app. After downloading the N26 app, you select your country and then fill in your personal information step-by-step, such as your name, date of birth, address, and nationality. After the basic info, you’ll be asked to choose a plan; I went for the free Standard plan. The final step is identity verification, for which I chose the video call option. Once connected, the agent will ask you to show your residence card, tilt it back and forth, and move your face closer to the camera to confirm it’s you. The call took about 3 minutes, and the agent was very helpful and guided me through it. Right after I hung up, the app showed that my account was activated! The physical card is said to arrive within 10 business days.

For anyone who hates hassle and wants to avoid dealing with traditional banks, N26 is definitely worth a try. You can start spending with the virtual card immediately after your application is approved—the experience is top-notch. The only potential downside is that depositing cash isn’t very convenient; you have to go to a partner supermarket, and there are fees associated with this at a N26 bank location. But these days, with most transactions being card or Bizum, cash is becoming less common, so it’s not a big issue for me. Hope this helps everyone!
